i cannot add more blocked users so i went one by one through that list ... starting from the first one i blocked. Not surprisingly, looking at each account, they are either Banned or have No Activity Since ~1 year.

Eventually there could be some site maintenance for [ Banned + Empty ] accounts so to clean our block lists accordingly ...

Some other optimization of this type could be made ... i believe it would free the server from useless work since the server have to compute removing according to Long Block Lists ... this task could be heavy in server work ...

What do you think ?

Calculating which posts/comments to hide based on blocklist sounds to me like something that could be appropriate to do client-side, so that users with long lists are the ones paying for the computation their choices required.

Another quirk of Lemmy to watch out for.

Later developments discussed in the post would indicate i have inadvertently induced you in error.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 week ago (1 children)

That’s okay you don’t have to like everyone.

[–] A_A 2 points 1 week ago

it's not about that ... it's the fact that the administrator of lemmy(dot)world explained there is no limit at 250 in the user block list but rather that it must have been a CloudFlare problem that they have resolved ...

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I'm over 200 blocked now. It would be nice to have that site maintenance idea working to clear out my list. I'll have to remember when I hit the limit.

@MrKaplan, administrator of Lemmy(dot)World, answered my wrong(?) post here ...
My post would make users believe there is a hard limit in Lemmy at something like 250 entries for the block list. This is what i thought while creating the post ... but further analysis by the administrator revealed the problem could be with CloudFlare.
Please take the time to read the thread to this effect somewhere inside this post.

Very weird. I can't see MrKaplan's post unless I logout, but he isn't in my blocklist. Maybe he's blocking me? I don't really know how the blocks work. Weird, but not a big deal.

[–] A_A 3 points 1 week ago (1 children)

You will see posts and comments of anyone who would be blocking you ... it works only one way. ~~The problem is, I am quite sure, that instances do not synchronize properly~~

... can’t see MrKaplan’s post unless I logout

You see them fom : sopuli.xyz but not when you are loged in there ? ? ?
... I must agree this is a really weird one !

I probably messed up something somewhere. And, yep, I can't see MrKaplan at sopuli.xyz, but if I open in a different container tab where I'm not logged in, still sopuli.xyz, I see the posts. It's not just MrKaplan, but really it happens on most pages. I'll see number of comments, but I can only see one or two. It's been like that for a long time, I just can't be bothered to figure it out. Β―\(ツ)/Β―.

while it would likely be a good idea to limit this, i don't see a limit in the code that would prevent from blocking more users. what's the actual error message you're seeing?

[–] A_A 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

i didn't have any error message but even if i clicked repeatedly on "block user", i did not get the pop up message saying :
"user_X is blocked"
... and when checking it, in my block list, (user x) was not added to the block list

[–] MrKaplan 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

there is a possibility that this was caused by a cloudflare rule that was not scoped narrowly enough to achieve what it's intended for. does this issue still persist for you?

[–] A_A 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

No. As soon as i started removing entries from that list i could again put more entries (maybe it is a coincidence) in the list.

[–] MrKaplan 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

might still have been related, i guess we'll never know.

the rule i changed did look like it had some false positives at least, so even if it wasn't that it should fix issues that could have been experienced by others randomly.

Thanks for researching this and thanks for maintaining the instance "Lemmy(dot)World".

As for optimization and code improvement ... i believe it will come in time as programmers and administrators are able to improve things ...

See you around πŸ‘πŸ˜

P.S. : added [solved] flare to title

Update :
it happens again (blocking user fail without message) but this time i see that the user account doesn't exist when i try to open the user account :
https://lemmy.world/u/bartlebees

bad taste post :
https://lemmy.world/post/25406359

Maybe this is what happened last time ?

P.S. : strangely the page for this account doesn't show the user is banned, but instead shows error message :

The server returned this error: unknown.

[–] MrKaplan 2 points 1 week ago

could be that it's the same thing, in this case it's the result of a user deleting their account.
