Lately I've been seeing a lot of posts in German in the All feed. I love that there's communities on Lemmy that aren't in English. I wish there were some available in my second language. However, I can't read or understand German and seeing posts in German regularly is starting to get a bit annoying.

Is there a setting available anywhere, that I've missed, to filter by language? Or, will I be best just blocking these communities as they come up in the feed?

If people have tagged them with the correct language, your language settings will filter out languages you haven't enabled.

If people haven't tagged their post with the correct language, then you can't filter it

that is, if you chose a language from the settings. otherwise you see all that's posted

Would rather have ability to translate them

I think we missed a valuable opportunity to only respond in German, like when that guy accidentally set his reddit to Spanish and everyone helped in Spanish.

Long term solution, learn German.

You should be able to block the German instance on the desktop, and it'll carry over to your app

Yes, but only if the language has been declared. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell not a single post originating from feddit.org's many communities declare the language to be German.

The good news is that Voyager (and Lemmy itself) supports blocking a whole instance: In Voyager tap Settings -> Filters and Blocks -> Blocked Instances -> (add feddit.org)

Blocking it this way means you will not have to block each community one-by-one.

Fortunately, this kind of block simply hides all posts and communities from the blocked instance. You can still see federated comments from their users as long as they are declared to be in a language you have selected in your profile settings (probably you have English and Undetermined selected)

not a single post originating from feddit.org’s many communities declare the language to be German.

There are communities on feddit.org that are configured to tag all the posts as German. It's a community based setting, so feel free to politely reach out if a community hasn't done so

Edit: I just checked, ironically only [email protected] automatically tags in English

@[email protected] FYI

Nein, aber Sie können die Community blockieren.

It motivated me to study German. But you can just block any communities that post in languages that you don't understand.

Click to go to the home page of the community you don't like. Then in the upper right corner select the dots then down at the bottom select block community.
