U.S. President Donald Trump once again hinted at the idea of serving a third term, saying he was "not 100 percent sure" he was barred from doing so under the Constitution, which forbids it.

He shouldn't be alive by then.

I believe it. I can't imagine he's read the constitution

Dude can only read the TV channel guide and tweets.

I hate to say it but I don't think we are making out if this one. I think even if he can't pull off running a third term we will pretty well screwed by the next election anyway.

No republican has won an election in what 30 years without a heavy trail of fraud afoot

He’s going for Dictator just like he said he would

OK, let him run against Obama then.

[–] GraniteM 8 points 1 day ago (3 children)

There's a proposed amendment that would permit a person to be elected president for a third term, but not if they have already served two consecutive terms. It's literally written so that Trump could run for a third term but Obama couldn't.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

Someone who hasnt won 2 consecutive terms would be more unpopular than someone who has

Would it even be possible to argue for this?

According to them, Trump didn't lose in 2020, so he's out as well.

[–] Madison420 4 points 1 day ago

It already says he's not qualified to be president.

The wording is no person shall be "elected" of Trump claims he won the last term too he is not legally entitled to be in office and that bill wouldn't change that fact.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Worst case, he does it. Best case, he gets resoundingly thumped by the legal system. But neither of those is going to happen. If he's even still alive in four years, I don't think the people really in charge will be able to hide the dementia like they are now.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

esoundingly thumped by the legal system

You're dreaming

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I don't disagree with you, but I'm not sure it would matter. When Trump dies they'll keep worshiping their immortal god emperor even when he's entombed in glass like Lenin.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 1 day ago

It's almost like he was telling another fascist dictator how he admired him for having zero term limits....

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

The Supreme Law of the Land, The Constitution bars him from a 3rd term. It would take a constitutional amendment to change that, which requires 2/3's of both houses, and 3/4 of the states. LoL, no buddy you can't. He's not 100% sure of a lot of things, this is but one, a huge one.

Have you taken a look at other portions of the constitution that would have blocked him this time around AND other laws that he’s breaking with his Executive Orders right now? Laws and the Constitution mean nothing if no one will enforce them, he has the other two branches of the government in his pocket, and I wouldn’t put it passed him to stage some sort of emergency suspending the next election to maintain power. WWIII isn’t off the table, especially with how he’s bullying our allies and sucking up to our enemies.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Tbf, his unconstitutional executive orders will not stand. The constitution is being enforced, a Reagan-Era judge just shot down the one on birthright citizenship without a second thought. Even if he tries to pull a Hitler, I have faith that he will fail, and he will not pass an amendment to make any of this possible.

What scares me isn't some kind of emergency power grab, it's the Supreme Court. If they look at one of his unconstitutional orders and say "Eh, fuck all prior case law and decisions by this very court, you're good." that is an unprecedented misuse of power and would undermine the entire point of the constitution.

pull a Hitler

Like, the last part…right?

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago

that is an unprecedented misuse of power

you mean like that whole immunity thing?

He is currently working on breaking the back of the constitution.

The whole "stopping funding" thing is a ploy to create a case that let him ask the supreme court to let his handlers ignore congress and remove the separation of powers that is one of the cornerstones of that entire document.

It's article 1. President isn't until article 2

He may drop a few nukes and it's a legal third term.

Then again, due to the complicity of everyone in power it can be done with even less paperwork (there will still be nukes but purely for entertainment, and pillaging).
