Nobody in Canada wants to be called American.
This is a language and continent model issue, the lack of understanding is not in the side of the Americans or the rest of the anglosphere.
I mean how dare we refer to people using the name that they refer to themselves with.
And what if they decided to start calling themselves Earthlings and use it to describe only themselves specifically?
Are you jealous of Americans having a demonym and scared they're going to claim another XD

I’m embarrassed because I can’t call myself American as a Canadian because it’s self-deprecating by association.
Confusingly, Mexico's official name is Estados Unidos Mexicanos. You could accurately describe a Mexican as Estadounidense, if you wanted to be a pedant.
There's no continent named Mexico, so I think things will be ok for now
But there's a Gulf! Oh wait nvm.
We can fix the problem by calling it Gulf of United States
I think a little translation is necessary. I don't speak it.
