Credits go to @kmh for creating this style. It comes in both a light and dark version (check the links for usage instructions).

If you don't want to fiddle with code and stuff, ~~loma.ml has already installed it server-wide~~*, and should be available straight away for new accounts (If not, go to Settings>Display>General Theme Settings and change it from there. Or follow the guide in any of the links above).

Edit: loma seems to require invites. But, while in german, joinfriendica.de allows you to join without an invite. It also has quite a bunch of add-ons too like bluesky, tumblr, ifttt, markdown, langfilter (filters the languages in posts/comments) and curweather (shows the current weather).

Time to switch Grandma?

She'll probably miss her friends though

[–] [email protected] 35 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Time to do a migration tea drinking afternoon

[–] [email protected] 34 points 2 days ago (3 children)

@Blaze @morrowind Unpopular opinion: Facebook until around 2016 or so (whenever it added stories for the 1st time) was the best social network in terms of UI and concept. It's just Zuck that decided to just copy everyone, every single feature, cram everything in a single website and gobble all user data (and now he's also supporting Trump and free speech). Oh, and the ads. The stupid ads getting you everywhere.

[–] [email protected] 30 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Google+ was better. The concept of "circles" being the primary way of interacting with people was ingenious and far better represents how real people interact. My fencing friends are not the same as my RPG friends who are not the same as my family.

Facebook adopted this with "lists", but they're not treated as the core part of the experience that G+'s Circles were, so they don't get used.

[–] jqubed 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

I’ve put everyone on a list but there have been times Facebook has made it hard to even post only for that list

[–] theangryseal 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Damn. I can’t imagine having enough people in my life to make lists.

There’s something wrong with me though. I’ve spent most of my life alone and my biggest fear has always been centered around being asked to leave my space.

Of course when you get older that gets harder. I’m lucky at the moment. I’m a stay at home dad who goes to spend time working on various projects with my uncle when I’m free.

If he died tonight I’d have no social life at all.

[–] jqubed 2 points 13 hours ago

Some of the lists are very small. It was very much inspired by Google+ and I did it so I could easily post things relevant only to certain groups that might not be relevant to others or that I wouldn’t want others to see.

I suppose I do have a lot of “friends” on Facebook, but I’ve also been on the platform for 20 years as of this month or next. I joined back when it was less than a year old and you had to be a university student, and back then you had to be at a university that was supported by the platform. You could list what dorm you were in and your class schedule, which made it easy to find other students in your class, helpful if you’d missed a class or something. It was actually really useful in an era when college classes were just starting to make more use of online tools. In that era it made sense to add a lot of people.

I’ve purged the list a few times, and I could probably go through it again. The vast majority I haven’t seen in years, and there are plenty I’d probably never spend time with socially. Very few are probably truly “friends” in a deep sense of the word. On the other hand, there have been a few times I’ve looked to see what somebody was up to and discovered they’d deleted me, which was occasionally disappointing. Of course, I’m also not really on there anymore like I used to be, so it might not even matter.

I don’t know how much I’d say something’s really wrong with you. It’s hard to me to say having no friends is better or worse than someone who has hundreds or thousands of “friends.” I think it’s hard to have more than a handful of real friends. It’s also hard as a parent to have time for other friends.

I hope your uncle gets to enjoy a long life in good health, and you’re able to branch out your circle even just a little.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Not sure it's that unpopular to be honest

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 days ago

@Blaze too many seem hyped about microblogging, though...

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

I actually agree 100%.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 2 days ago (1 children)

She still sees posts from friends? It's probably mostly minions memes about immigrants by now.

[–] theangryseal 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Remember when America was white except for the hood that we didn’t drive through.

Minion farm remembers.

I can’t believe that gif exists. I expected to find more cheesy confederate minion pics though.

Edit:

Oh my God I need to make a bunch of crazy dumb minion memes centered around the Pepperidge farm meme and see if people post them unironically. You know they will.

[–] jaggedrobotpubes 2 points 1 day ago

Anybody who gives a rat's ass about grandma wants to see her hanging out in places that aren't actively hostile to her, and will at least consider switching.

If they insist on keeping her in places that want to see her come to a bad end just to make a buck, then we can safely stop calling or thinking of those people as friends.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Her friends have been dead for years. She just sees posts from an AI bot fed with their data now and thinks they are still alive.

[–] [email protected] 26 points 1 day ago (1 children)

finally, friendica is usable!

[–] Dremor 13 points 1 day ago

The regular UI looks like out of the 10's, maybe earlier. And god that default color scheme is awful.

[–] [email protected] 27 points 2 days ago

This awesome because users care about only one thing : no change, ever.

[–] [email protected] 29 points 2 days ago

Looks promising! Giving Friendica an UI of this century

[–] [email protected] 22 points 2 days ago (2 children)

Awesome to see TBH. Friendica is kinda the platform that the Fedi forgot and it might be a better place if it got more love.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

yeah, looking at the federation systems it supports is insane and I really want to try it out honestly

from Wikipedia:

Friendica users can connect with others via their own Friendica server, but may also fully integrate contacts from other platforms including Diaspora, Pump.io, GNU social, email, Discourse[9] and more recently ActivityPub (including Mastodon, Pleroma and Pixelfed) and Bluesky[10][11] into their 'newsfeed'. In addition to these two way connections, users can also use Friendica as a publishing platform to post content to WordPress, Tumblr, Insanejournal[12] and Libertree. Posting to Google+ was also supported until that service was shut down. In addition, RSS feeds can be ingested.[13] Because users are distributed across many servers, their "addresses" consist of a username, the "@" symbol, and the domain name of the Friendica instance in the same manner email addresses are formed. Twitter support was available but was deprecated due to API changes under Elon Musk's leadership rendering it unusable.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago) (3 children)

Maybe I should ask here. The reason I'm here is because I'm looking for answers to this. As far as the integration with Lemmy goes, how does it work? Is there a 'Friendica' instance that anyone using that platform would be posting and interacting from? And in that case, does it play nicely with the other instances?

I'm pretty new here, probably moving to another instance at some point anyway. And I've been thinking of looking into these multi purpose platforms that play nicely with others. Because why not have more features and tools to play with, even if I don't use half of them. It might also fill in nicely for features that are missing here like multicommunities and posting to your own profile.

Also heard of mbin, although an in app search for something like "mbin" seems pretty useless here.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (6 children)

@Zero22xx There are multiple Friendica instances. You can check them in the Friendica Directory (in the servers section) or other more global lists of Fediverse servers like the-federation.info, FediDB etc. Friendica has groups too, but besides the [email protected] (or probably even the [email protected] one) they're pretty much lacking activity (you're still free to post anyway, there are plenty of them).

If you need some help, you can also post on the former one by creating a regular post and mentioning the group with "!" or "@". I have also created a megathread with various resources and a small Q&A (it's actually vice-versa tbh, since the Q&A took the most space on it, but I digress) in order to get yourself started: https://libranet.de/display/0b6b25a8-2167-82af-600d-9ea129892452

I think lemmy is a bit of the odd one out, so far i can interact between mastodon and pixelfed ok, and I can post from mastodon to lemmy, but in lemmy I can't really interact with mastodon or pixelfed.

If you want a lot more in on profile I'd check out mastodon, I just don't really get the Twitter style so I never know how to really use it for memes

Loma.ml is invite only btw

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 day ago (1 children)

The rounded corners on the "set title" input box (in contrast to the other input fields) bothers me more than it should...

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago

@thebustinator Guess it's the author is still working on it, polishing it out, but there's a start

[–] [email protected] 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Now the hard part is to get Friendica to integrate it in its base code, and somehow prompt users upon sign-up to choose their user interface !

I understand though that friendica devs might be reluctant to integrate it if they can't get assurances that this UI project will be maintained into the future.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

@anticurrent @[email protected] Fortunately, Friendica is flexible enough. All servers can set a default theme, and much of what people dislike about Friendica can just be fixed by swapping the Frio theme (which is default to many of the servers) with this one. In fact, there's already a server who did just that: loma.ml

Here's how it's local feed looks like right now

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

yeah, that does resemble facebook alot. without the bloat, that is.

[–] jaybone 5 points 1 day ago (3 children)

Wasn’t there a show with “bookface”? At first I was thinking the remake of Arrested Development, but that was Faceblock.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

On an episode of Castle, the daughter character was introducing the mother character to the internet, and the mother character says "I've now got a page on MyFace."

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago (1 children)

You might be thinking of "FriendFace" from IT Crowd, that was my initial thought when I saw this

[–] jaybone 2 points 1 day ago

Nah, I didn’t watch IT Crowd. Apparently there’s this https://knowyourmeme.com/memes/bookface but that’s not what I was thinking of either. Oh well.

Just wish there was an iOS app…

[–] [email protected] 1 points 16 hours ago* (last edited 16 hours ago)

It's compatible with the Mastodon API, so some of the apps work for it. I was talking to the developer of an iOS Mastodon the other day and they are off checking compatibility at the moment.

edit: I also started a thread on people's experience with apps on [email protected].

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There's Relatica, it's in active development, and it's multiplatform including IOS, but it's in beta right now

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

@Fitik @the_boxhead Yep. Look out for updates on Relatica if you're on iOS

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

The MAU is growing, it’s likely one developer will be inspired to make one.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

loma.ml has already installed it server-wide

I can't see anything without an account and I can't create an account without an invitation code.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Just don’t follow much on Friendica due to a lack of iOS app. And only had one for android. For it to really take off, we need app development as well. This is a great step though as an easy UI will promote use.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

There’s an in-dev app called Relatica for iOS that you can get TestFlight access to. It’s quite good!

https://gitlab.com/mysocialportal/relatica

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

That’s great news! Will check it out.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yeah I would set it up for my family today if there was an iOS app. How many years has it been out and still no app?

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

@scrubbles What do you see as the advantages of an app over a web app?

@hollerpixie

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 day ago

Most people like to have the phone app for socials, makes it easy to browse or keep on top of posts more convenient. Honestly, I can’t really think of any social media platform that isn’t app based for this very reason. Goals for success: make it easy to use, engaging, and have an app with a good UI.
