I’ve got a little stainless Coast A5, which I love, but its beam pattern is very, very much inspection torch. Dead circular, even spread.

Is there anything similar in body, but with a more every-day torch beam? I don’t really want some black knobbly military-cosplayer’s thing, I’m not too bothered about a built in charging port, I want minimal. I love the simple, smooth stainless body of the A5, it lives in my smart jacket pocket along with an elegant little pocket knife, I just wish it had a thrower-style beam.

The Emisar KC1 with W1 LED is probably as close as you'll get to a thrower in that form factor. I'm not sure the exact amount of throw with that LED is known, but with the less throwy dedomed Nichia 519A, it hits 118m FL1 throw with a 10440 Li-ion battery and 58m with a AAA Eneloop. If those numbers sound like enough, I'd suggest the dedomed 519A for its color rendering.

Lots of other options have a reflector and the classic bullseye beam profile. Unfortunately, my favorites keep getting discontinued, or only come in expensive versions.

Its not an aaa thrower but the smallest thrower i know is the lumintop gt nano which can use a 10440 battery which is the same size as an aaa but lithium.

Thanks for the suggestion, I think I’m not going to get anywhere near a genuine thrower that’s pocket-sized, by the look of the business-end of that lad.

The Coast A5 is a really slim pencil touch, it’ll sit next to my pocket knife in a jeans pocket or jacket breast pocket, I reckon I’ll be stuck with my little round circle of light of I want to keep the form factor!

Hi, I know next to nothing about flashlights, so this may sound stupid, sorry in advance but in all I saw these two posts so thought i'd drop a link

Those are 18650 battery lights. A 18650 is about twice the diameter of a AAA. 18650 is the defacto standard for flashlights these days because of the size and energy density.

A 18650 is 18mm diameter and 65.0mm long.

The AAA battery is ~10mm diameter and ~40mm long, very close in size to a 10440 battery.

But you can't assume you can throw a 10440 lithium into a AAA flashlight, because lithium voltage is lower than a primary (alkaline, etc).

Other way round. But your point is still valid

Okay, cool, thank you for explaining that, I did not know any of that. Sorry it wasn't of any help.

Not exactly what you're looking for, but I've carried a Walmart led light, 2 AAA, twist focus, for a few years now. The price varies, but I've never paid more than $15 for one, and I use NiMh rechargeables in them.

I've also carried this one, they claim 270 lumen, it's surprisingly good. On narrow focus it throws a good 150', though I'd say effective is more like 50' (it would reflect animal eyes at 150, and you may see them, if it's really dark out).

I think getting high lumen from a single AAA is a tough challenge, in that it's a bit niche so finding one is rare. I'd sure like to have one.

I picked up a single AAA light from Bass Pro for about $12, works fine for what it is, but it's no thrower. I can't find it on their website, but they have a rechargeble one that does 300 lumen.

It's going to be kind of difficult but would penlight style (two AAA's) be ok? It would still be a thin light, if that is what you're after. Or maybe there is something with an optic. Any reflector big enough to give decent throw will also widen the light some.
