Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:

Pfft who would trust those mercury filled devices. They are obviously filled with government made mercury nano bots used to spy on us, and make us think the temps on the rise. This is so the goverment can TAX us more and take away our right of burning plastics! WAKE UP SHEEPLE.

Man, they really have no other playbook.

Wonderful, after spending years insisting this was never going to happen and was a 'hoax', once it has started happening, people like this just insist the news is lying.

People on the right in the USA and Canada have also been claiming that "liberals" started the wildfires in order to convince people of the climate change hoax. It's insane what they will do to avoid uncomfortable reality.

In Canada the leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, who has a decent chance of being elected PM, even accused Trudeau's government in Parliament of starting the fires. It's surprising that didn't get more media attention. You can hear him shout "started by your government" at 1:02 in this clip:

I've been sharing this CBC clip in response to some of those conspiracy claims: https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/2226499139566

Lying for profit will be the death of humanity.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Not just humanity, unfortunately. A whole lot of other life on the planet too.

How can anyone be in denial about this? Have they tried STEPPING THE FUCK OUTSIDE?

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Because some places aren't as hot and people's baselines shift over time

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

This one is so easy to verify it’s a joke. Any fool can go outside and see how hot it is.

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

The problem is that it's not equally hot everywhere and people's baselines change, so you can get a surprising number of people to go along with this

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

"It's fine here" or "I've adapted to the heat here" is very common to see.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

“it’s all fine”

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago
