Doing my part

[–] [email protected] 72 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It’s time I put down my negative review on the steam page.

Yep. I played Apex Legends since day one. About 2 years ago I discovered that on PopOS, it ran at 1440p, no upscaling, and was 20 to 25% faster with almost zero stutter.

It was a huge jump in stability and made the game enjoyable to play.

I quit playing about a year ago, but I will never go back to playing it on windows. So I guess that means I can no longer play Apex.

Did my part. If I have to run Windows along with a root kit to play a game, I'll stick to Linux.

TBH, the game wasn't really that great to begin with.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 month ago

Yeah, I agree.

I played about 30 min then uninstalled back when I was still on Windows.

I can’t wait for the media to report on this!

To me, if Valve wants Linux multiplayer to have a future, they need to demonstrate that they can develop a good Linux anti-cheat solution.

That's much easier said than done. But I hope it's a problem that they're working on. Otherwise, it's going to limit the potential of the Steam Deck and other future Valve Linux hardware.

I think the problem is that game publishers also want the cheapest and laziest solutions. What EA (and others) are doing now are basically "give us full control of your computer so we can do whatever we want" with their kernel level anti-cheats. Server side anti-cheat requires more processing that they have to pay for, and requires more work to develop heuristics and other algorithms to detect cheaters.

one way to burn this all down is for hardware cheats to become even more popular, a triggerbot hardware cheat is as simple as a adruino plugged into your USB and your computer sees it as a capture card and a mouse and that's the simpler solution.

If they start to ban capture cards or PCs with 2 mouse, it can be upgraded to be a hdmi and mouse pass through

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 month ago (1 children)

they will eventually make it so restrictive it will be impossible for people to actually play, before they consider a serverside solution.

I think Microsoft and their partners have been dreaming about turning PCs into fully locked down platforms for a long time, completely unrelated to gaming. Hardware DRM including display devices and cables, and only running "trusted" software is the end goal.

Indeed and this is part of the problem as well - even if Valve magically developed some almost perfect Linux anticheat solution, implementing it is still more effort than just continuing to ban Linux users.

[–] [email protected] 23 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Look to Minecraft servers like Hypixel for how anticheat should be done. You can completely hack your client, but your every movement is scrutinized by the server and only the data you need is received. This cripples what cheating can allow you to do without using client side anticheat and still enabling mods that improve quality of life.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 month ago

While i do like how hypixel does it, hypixel has a LOT of cheaters, even in an environment significantly less conducive to them than stuff like valorant and apex.

We'll see if Valve's partnership with Arch expands, it's been suggested that Valve could do signature verification on the OS as a fork of verification.

It would be nice of Valve could put this issue to rest considering its the top blocker on some leaderboards games.

Personally I hope they solve it by making it "opt-in" for "Verified Multiplayer" as opposed to opt-out 'take it or leave it' as many games get canned robbing purchasers of their ability to enjoy abandoned games.

I wish I could upvote this more

I seem to have angered some people, the downvotes are almost equal with the ups lol

Its not series to anyone who thinks it is, I play on Linux because I have it, I don't cheat. If you think I'm somehow making EA think we're actually cheaters: they don't read the reviews you silly goose

[–] Buddahriffic 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

It's in the uncanny valley. Not the uncanny valley of cheaters vs people parodying cheaters, but the uncanny valley of parodying cheaters to protest the change vs parodying cheaters to say people insisting on Linux are doing so because they do want to cheat.

The negative review is a tip off, but that was my first interpretation of it (that you meant people who wanted it on Linux just want to cheat).

Fair enough, I figured being a Lemmy user was enough indication that I'm a legit Linux user that's annoyed by this, but yeah I see what you mean

I refuse to edit it and will eat the karma as it lands, as is my fate

E: ah, someone else did basically the same joke I did but they left an obviously legit review, so mine looks like I'm making fun of them. My comment is older, or theirs went up as I made mine, but I totally see what the issue is now, mines beneath theirs and looks like sarcasm at them

[–] Buddahriffic 4 points 1 month ago

There's still a vocal minority of people upset about all the Linux talk on Lemmy, though I find deadpan is generally a lot less risky here than it was on Reddit.

And respect for keeping the historical record accurate even if it results in an unhappy score. I do the same. 👊

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 month ago

Wow I can't believe they put in the work to make anti cheat work on linux and then they just removed it.

My steam isnt activated sadly so i cant review anything myself lolz
