Ye Power Trippin' Bastards

This is a community in the spirit of "Am I The Asshole" where people can post their own bans from lemmy or reddit or whatever and get some feedback from others whether the ban was justified or not.

Sometimes one just wants to be able to challenge the arguments some mod made and this could be the place for that.

Telling a known troublemaker they are on thin ice isn't "power tripping".

If anything it's a mistake to not ban them, their behavior hasn't shown signs of changing. When it comes to people like this banning them is the best thing for the community, or even the instance/fediverse as a whole.

I was hoping they just acted a bit harshly because of their concerns about the matter at hand, but it seems that that was a mistake.

YDI and honestly CLM, them tolerating you being there is a tactical error as a moderator. Your reputation precedes you, it's well known that you've very uncivil, hostile, and often engage in bad-faith discourse. I couldn't blame most mods for banning you on sight, I couldn't even blame most mods for banning you preemptively with an API request if they knew before. I can't even blame many instance admins for banning you from their site, because your behavior is atrocious, and isn't changing.

Also a clueless mod, if they understood the situation with this person they would've banned him on sight. His bad behavior doesn't show any sign of changing so it would be a wise thing to do. Normally it's not great to do but in cases where the person has a long history of hostility and bad behavior it makes sense.

YDI.

Also, I'm starting to suspect you do it on purpose. I mean, you're constantly doing and saying things you know will be downvoted.

I remember downvote farming as a hobby on Reddit; they even had a few subreddits with leaderboards. I never really understood the appeal but I just came up with a theory:

I think it might be a fetish. Kind of like those people that like to be humiliated and/or punished. Is it the punishment and scorn that excites you?

That being said, you definitely deserve all the bans you collect like trophies.

Update: Linkerbaan has now been permabanned from his home instance. I think the content of this post and his extensive modlog history more than justifies their decision. While I am sympathetic with linkerbaans position that the US government is complicit in the genocide in Gaza, he frequently made baseless accusations against others, abused the reporting system, and was extremely hostile to other users. He was given many second chances, and I commend the LW team for being so patient with him in general, especially given the level of abuse they were subjected to by this user.

I’m one of the mods there. We generally try to stay neutral unless someone posts blatant disinformation, or is not acting kind and is starting combative comment threads. You’ve done the latter a lot.

Moreover, our bias is to let the reports and downvotes guide us. The people in c/videos have been complaining to us about your behavior for quite a while now, and they‘ve not been appreciating the content and comments you’ve been contributing.

We’re a community of people. If you can’t participate constructively in that community, please find another community or create your own community. Lemmy is a federated system - you have options.
