/c/TenFoward: Your home-away-from-home for all things Star Trek!

Re-route power to the shields, emit a tachyon pulse through the deflector, and post all the nonsense you want. Within reason of course.

~ 1. No bigotry. This is a Star Trek community. Remember that diversity and coexistence are Star Trek values. Any post/comments that are racist, anti-LGBT, or generally "othering" of a group will result in removal/ban.

~ 2. Keep it civil. Disagreements will happen both on lore and preferences. That's okay! Just don't let it make you forget that the person you are talking to is also a person.

~ 3. Use spoiler tags. This applies to any episodes that have dropped within 3 months prior of your posting. After that it's free game.

~ 4. Keep it Trek related. This one is kind of a gimme but keep as on topic as possible.

~ 5. Keep posts to a limit. We all love Star Trek stuff but 3-4 posts in an hour is plenty enough.

~ 6. Try to not repost. Mistakes happen, we get it! But try to not repost anything from within the past 1-2 months.

~ 7. No General AI Art. Posts of simple AI art do not 'inspire jamaharon'

~ 8. No Political Upheaval. Political commentary is allowed, but please keep discussions civil. Read here for our community's expectations.

Fun will now commence.

Honestly, the fact that they modeled nipples for it is disturbing.

You've got to motivate employees somehow

I just tried for about 10 minutes to find the gif I wanted. Do you have any idea how hard the popularity of DS9 has made it to get the footage of the original Ferengi with whips?

[–] Anticorp 3 points 3 months ago

I'm pretty sure they were supposed to be the main bad guys when they were introduced, but the cardassians are way more intimidating.

Laugh all you want but it is still better than some of the stuff from TNG, DS9, VOY and ENT. Mostly because the computer animation was low quality and the other series were filmed with digital cameras with a fixed resolution. You can watch the original Star Trek in 4k if you want.

I particularly like his little party hat

And, honestly, why is this episode not memed into oblivion? Gorn? Check. Pike beep boop? Check. Poisonous space yeti lizard thing? Nothing. Allow me to offer a crossover:

And, honestly, why is this episode not memed into oblivion?

There's an episode of Futurama where the plot is an obvious parody of this. So that's something at least?

How could I forget a Dr. Zoidberg episode.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago

Did they have to get the pineal gland to cure him?

[–] [email protected] 14 points 3 months ago

Bonus fun fact: This episode is also the introduction of Dr. M'Benga.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 3 months ago

Which also came back in a Lower Decks episode with Ferengi (who end up turning their poaching camp into a mugato habitat)

I thought it was something like an albino gorilla.

It has spines,is poisonous. and a lizard-like tail!

Edit: Fixing my impassioned typing.

Is this the one where they made the murder pact? Like, "Promise me you'll kill me if it happens"

[–] [email protected] 4 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I originally replied thinking it was a yes, but sadly, I was wrong. I had to watch the whole episode to verify. There is some weird "magic" in this one that confused me there.

It's amazing how cheesy the original series was sometimes, and how it survived that to evolve into an amazing franchise.

[–] [email protected] 9 points 3 months ago (1 children)

It was an amazing franchise to begin with. Yeah, there is a lot of cheese and camp - but, when it launched initially, it was relatively amazing character and story work.

The camp was kinda necessary to keep people there. They had to compete with this ffs:

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 months ago (2 children)

cheese is not necessarily a bad thing

[–] [email protected] 1 points 3 months ago (1 children)

And had arguably better stories than anything after TnG

[–] [email protected] 3 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago)

I have to hard disagree here. SNW, in particular, has some really great stories. DS9 is arguably the best story telling of them all (though I've only seen random episodes personally), DSC is actually a really good story overall but the writers literally lost the plot. DS9 has the best overarching plot of them all. VOY had some unfortunate writing late in its run because the trope of "let's get home" ran out. ENT suffered most from the writers writing characters more than a plot (imo). My point here being that there are so very many Treks that people can find their own enjoyment. My personal favorite is SNW. TNG was very instrumental for me growing up, but I refuse to allow the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia taint what I prefer, especially when Star Trek's main points are diversity and inclusion - and the one time I was able to "see myself" in an episode was DSC.

So, no, I don't think that it is arguable whatsoever that the shows after TNG had worse storytelling. They were (and are) simply different. Want an episodic anthology? Try TOS, TNG, or VOY. Want a deep story that lasts the entire time? Yeah, that's DS9. Like people that are just trying to do science winding up in an insane situation? DSC. Want a modern retake on TOS with well-developed characters? SNW.

My overall point here is that while some may not like one version of Star Trek, there are many who will love it. Personal tastes are important, and that is why it is important to find your Trek while refraining from bashing, taunting, or bullying the people that like the stuff you do not.

[–] ricdeh 5 points 3 months ago (1 children)

Lol I don't remember that at all

[–] [email protected] 8 points 3 months ago* (last edited 3 months ago) (1 children)

It seems as though the collective memory of Star Trek has forgotten it. I have no clue as to why this isn't the single most memed TOS moment.

[–] kaitco 6 points 3 months ago (1 children)

What’s the episode title? I feel a need to revisit.
