Google offers 128GB of storage for the Pixel 9 Pro and XL, but that's nowhere near enough for a flagship built to last seven years.

Better cameras equal higher photo size equals same storage. <- googles brain.

Leads to more Google One subscription - FTFY

They don't want you to have onboard storage. Everything goes in the cloud where they can best monetize it.

Oof true. In my case I auto upload to nextcloud on my home NAS which replicates to an off site ZFS repository. Not ideal for the average use though 😞

And then there's me. I don't even know how much space my phone has, probably around 128gb but 16 or 32 is all I need tbh. Haven't used my camera for about 5 years. Don't even know if it works. Also: probably wouldn't buy a pixel phone.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Why wouldn't you buy a pixel though?

[–] amstafff 2 points 2 months ago

Don't get me wrong. It's an alright phone, but too expensive for its hardware.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 months ago (2 children)

I, for one, am outraged that cheaper options are available for people who don't use very much storage.

Aren't people mad because the prices are disconnected from reality? It looks like an extra $100 to jump 128 to 256? Meanwhile we can all see retail prices for 128 G microSD cards.

Apple does this bullshit with their soldered RAM and everyone is rightfully enraged by that also.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

It's the same when you buy a laptop, the upcharge on extra ram and storage is brutal. It's worthwhile to buy a basic model and upgrade it.

A 256 gb sd card is like 25 dollars. And that is retail money. It costs them probably pennies.

That's plenty for me, but I'm probably far from a typical user of these things.

I barely store anything besides apps on my phone. Photos get automatically synced to my nextcloud, and after I sort them I just delete them from my phone. I also self-host all of my music, and just stream from that using Navidrome. Has worked pretty well for me so far.

Actually I think that's pretty much all I do with my phone lol, maybe I should look for a cheaper one next time as I don't really need a flagship or anything.

Agreed. I desperately wanted a Pixel phone with 1TB, when I saw that not only is the Pro available in a normal size model this year, BUT with a 1TB option I got excited...until I saw that it adds $500 to the base price of the phone, bringing it to a whopping $1499.

I'm gonna wait and see what the pricing looks like on Black Friday. I was originally wanting to keep my Pixel 8 until support ran out, but I'm already over half full on my 256gb, and my screen is having the green screen issues. I know I can get it warrantied, but the 1tb normal sized Pro is just a tempting option.

[–] sacbuntchris 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Wow that pricing is rough. They usually knock $200 off the price of pixels pretty quickly, and not just on Black Friday. They also f around with the trade in pricing which I think is a bad look, especially for their own products.

[–] Lordran_Hollow 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

Yeah it's absolutely awful. I haven't checked out the trade-in pricing. I haven't ever tried that before, I was considering trading in my pixel 8, but I like having a spare in case something happens to my main phone and it needs to be repaired.

But yes, I agree it is a bad look.

[–] sacbuntchris 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My spare is still my 3XL. It would be rough. You could always pick up an a series if you need a phone quickly

[–] Lordran_Hollow 2 points 2 months ago

Yeah my mom convinced me to trade-in my 8 and just get the Pro model.

I have/had a 6, but the battery became extra spicy and I haven't gotten around to getting a replacement.

My Pixel 2 is still happily kicking though, no swelling and still turns on. Though the battery doesn't last long at all.

They quoted like $450-$490 for my Pixel 8, but I imagine it's going to be even less as the screen is still flashing green. Even though they're doing warranty replacements on the P8 because of that, I'm betting they're going to use it as an excuse to slash the value off the trade-in.

I mean I've got all my photos I've ever taken, I take videos in 4k, all my music downloaded in lossless alac, and I've got plenty of space on my 128gb pixel

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My Pixel records 4K video at about 8MB/sec. That means 128GB would hold like 4 hours of video tops.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 months ago

mine seem closer to 6mb/s. idk its enough for me so

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

My music library alone is nearly 280GB, and all the pictures/video I've taken are over 450GB. No way I'm fitting all that into 128GB. That doesn't take into account any media I want to watch offline, or any games I may choose to load onto my phone.

This is why I like having an micro SD card slot (and headphone jack) and don't like that if I upgrade to a Pixel, I'll lose it.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago (1 children)

how much music? pictures? also, why keep all your pics on a phone? offload them to your computer or cloud or something

[–] [email protected] 1 points 2 months ago

I do offload a lot of it, I have my own server, I run my own streaming service(s). But I like keeping my music library offline for scenarios when I don't have internet available. I don't really keep my photos all on my phone. Of course, Google would love it if I offloaded all my stuff to their cloud and Google Photos and such, and paid for the privilege instead of hosting everything myself or having an SD card.

I just think 128GB is a pitifully small amount for anyone with any significant amount of media they want to carry.

[–] bradboimler 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm currently using 34 out of 128 GB on my phone ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

[–] HRDS_654 1 points 2 months ago

I wish this were me. I thought I would be fine with 128GB but I'm currently using 78% of my storage. Not even sure where it all went, but I do love taking random pictures that I forget about, so it's probably that. It also probably doesn't help that all my pictures are in the highest available quality without being RAW.
