That only counts as one!

Look Mr. Frodo! It's an oliphant!

Those poor animals. I fucking hate people!

Agreed. Absolutely abusive.

It's still very cool armor though... and at least (I think) no one is using war elephants anymore.

The armor is indeed an impressive historic piece of defense technology! I wonder why they left the lower legs unprotected? That created a weak spot I guess. Considering spears were used a lot on the battlefields of that age, it was probably possible to cut their tendons but I am of course just guessing here.

Would they be able to protect the legs and still give it enough movement?

[–] Nacktmull 1 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Why not? Think of medieval knight armor.

Elephants aren't people. Their legs work differently.

Well, for one thing, they're quadrupeds. For another, they walk on their toes.

[–] Nacktmull 1 points 1 month ago

That is both true of course. However, I don't understand how that would mechanically interfere with wearing armor.

Hey! You're welcome to post here, of course, but the main community has been moved to [email protected] due to Kbin being out (indefinitely?).

Thanks. FYI, this was linked to at HistoryPorn, which is why I posted here.

Oh god, is that a brace connecting the legs to the tusks to the trunk? That's so horribly cruel, in addition to the other reasons this would probably be incredibly painful for the animal.

[–] FlyingSquid 2 points 2 months ago (1 children)

I'm not sure what you're saying exactly. The chain appears to be something akin to the reins for a horse.

[–] YarHarSuperstar 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago) (1 children)

Oh I was seeing the spikes on the tusks wrong, my bad. Still cruel af

[–] FlyingSquid 2 points 2 months ago

No argument from me there. Absolutely cruel. But it's not like they were kind to animals in general in the 16th century, so it's not especially surprising on that front.
