Oh no! That's almost six minutes worth of revenue!

[–] Anticorp 62 points 6 months ago* (last edited 6 months ago) (3 children)

That seemed a bit ridiculous, so I checked. You're right, except it's not just revenue, it's profit. They make about $900k profit every minute.

So that would be around $2.40 fine for someone making 50k/year

Just think of how many laws I can break at $2.40 a pop!

[–] Anticorp 13 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I still wouldn't be able to, since I spend all my money on my crippling avocado toast addiction.

Just be racist to the cashier when purchasing the avocado and in their absolute distress, walk out with it without paying.

Not sure if that'd be $2.40 or $4.80 but might be the cheaper way to fuel the addiction.

Yeah, without paying it, so you save like 10 dollars by not paying for your shit, and then only have to pay 4.80 back in fines.

Idk what labour laws they broke, but companies are always getting away with shit like this, or even if they're penalised, they're still left profiting from the crime.

Hell I live in the Nordics with arguably one of the best labour protections in the world and like over half the jobs I've done have had the companies try to fuck me over with the compensation. From private people to large companies. Overtime, mandated breaks, whatever it may be.

Fuck capitalism. (Love market economies though.)

Fines are obviously not doing anything to companies like this. Charge the people making decisions.

Break up these massive corporations.

That's fun too. But ultimately has the same function as a fine. The circle of ~~life~~ AT&T has taught us that. Nothing will change unless people are actually held accountable.

Surprise, Amazon warehouse jobs are Akin to sweatshops. They try to parse bullshit to get around regulations so that they can suck every last bit of energy from their employees causing their bodies long term harm in the process.

I guess they’ll just fire these employees, cut off their insurance and send them out to pasture . I bet they’ll fill those vacant positions with newly arrived workers from other countries.

The corporate jobs aren't much better. The pay is great for tech workers, but no amount of money makes the 10% yearly cull, the added layoffs, and micromanagement easier.

To your last point, though, you'd be surprised at how hard it can be as a very experienced candidate from outside the US to land a role in the US. I have had multiple HM's that have wanted to hire me for my experience in their market, but they have been forced to take domestic candidates or to run weeks of interviews with external candidates to rule out that a foreigner should get a tech role.

That's like 1 hour of profits? Ooooo. They're scared now.

[–] nothingcorporate 12 points 6 months ago (1 children)

I can't wait for The supreme Court to invalidate this and rule that fining corporations is unconstitutional... for reasons.

[–] isles 6 points 6 months ago

They don't have to - if the penalty is a fine, then it's just the cost of business. Everyone is fine with the system - as long as the profits gained from breaking the rule are bigger than the fine, behavior won't change.

[–] Etterra 8 points 6 months ago

That's not a penalty. That's a rounding error.

That number suffix should start with a B rather than M

[–] BoxerDevil 2 points 6 months ago

Or at least 2 more zeros

pennies

I doubt the quotas bring in that much value but its a small price to pay for power tripping tech bros
