"In addition, Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans." Never seen this sentence before.

Oh, they want to play the "open waters" card?

Either international laws apply or the guy was within his rights to just steal everything in his room.

It's all fun and games, dodging the Royal Caribbean bill, until twenty years later, you join a fishing tour, and the Royal Caribbean Navy boards your trawler.

WTF they can't forceably detain you for payment any more than the door greeter at walmart. Tell them to get fucked and send a bill.

Considering that a US hospital will charge you a few grand for even looking in their direction these days, $2,500.22 for something serious, like seizures, sounds like a steal :(

True, but:

Once on land, in Florida, Wasney was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale, where he incurred thousands of dollars more in medical expenses.

Well, obviously, he should have refused evacuation.

The specifics in this situation matter, but it sounds like the cruise ship provided a reasonable bill.

The Stockholm syndrome of Americans talking about how they didn't bilk him for as much as they could and would have on land every time this story comes up is really fucking sad 😮‍💨

I own a cruise line with rates less than 99% what Royal Caribbean charges for life threatening injuries in international waters.

Just pay me the money and you'll be super safe fucking around in places where nobody really wants you and\or you burn mountains of tar to get there in disgustingly unsanitary 'luxury' . We promise you'll be safe and entertained- just give me the fucking money.

I've seen first hand the amount of fuel that giant warships consume. It is a fuck-ton.

Those cruise ships are bigger and burn even more fuel.

Travellers insurance is a thing.

Royal Caribbean does not accept "land-based" health insurance plans.

Travellers insurance isn't your standard health insurance.
