Scientists have created a new type of hybrid food - a "meaty" rice that they say could offer an affordable and eco-friendly source of protein.

The porous grains are packed with beef muscle and fat cells, grown in the lab.

The rice was first coated in fish gelatine to help the beef cells latch on, and the grains were left in a petri dish to culture for up to 11 days.

The researchers say the food may serve as "relief for famine, military ration, or even space food" in the future.

It remains to be seen whether consumers would take to it if it gets to market.

Meat rice sounds like what the underclass eats in a dystopian cyberpunk story

On the other hand, taco rice is delicious; throw taco seasoning in this and it could be fantastic

I wish our dystopia was as cool as a sci-fi story.

I do love rice, so if I could get protein out of it I'd be super on board. Probably more expensive than the 25 pound bag I get for 25 dollars right now, though.

Babe, what's wrong? You hardly touched your artificial maggot bowl.

I love this, at least the idea of this. It could go a long way to remove food instability around the world.

..

which is why we probably won't get to see it

I’ll stick with my beans and rice if it’s the same to everyone. And I’ll try to get more into the miracle that is lentils

I have nothing against lab grown meat, every bit of carbon reduction helps. But for those who can consume legumes they need to be the backbone of our dietary protein consumption. It’s good and healthy and it’s good for the planet.

Been cooking lentils and rice as the foundation of my meal prep for years now as a lifter, it's good stuff! Best protein per unit compared to most beans. Love them.

Hear hear!

Lentils are awesome!!

Isn't one of the main benefits of rice being its shelf-life? Longevity without the need to refrigerate?

How well does the beef rice keep on a shelf at room temperature?

All right, that one doesn't roll off the tongue quite as well
