The Oregon Legislature has passed a bill that recriminalizes the possession of small amounts of drugs. The Senate approved the measure Friday.

I expect that this change will not reduce overdose rates, but it will fill prisons and give police an excuse to go after drug users they don't like.

From what I've heard this is necessary. They went too far originally and it ended up with a fair bit of open drug use in public spaces the police couldn't do anything about.

At least that's what some lemmy person claiming to be from Oregon once told me.

It sounds to me like they did this to kill the poor faster and make decriminalization look bad originally because they implemented said decriminalization without adaquate social services or addiction resources. I'm not gonna celebrate mentally ill people being locked up and forced to labor for pennies by the state.
