The answer I’ve come to accept is simple: WE DON’T.
This is one of the drawbacks of federation. Just now, I created @[email protected] because the first magazine I created was on lemmy.world which has been defederated by beehaw. They said it was because the influx of users on lemmy.world made it impossible to moderate with the current toolset.
Hopefully the defederating between instances doesn't become a pattern. It's hard to imagine this catching on if users have to micromanage their communities.
Right now, it sounds like everyone really just needs better moderation tools that just don't exist yet. Beehaw already said they don't intend for the defederation to be permanent.
agreed. I was just in a discussion where people were talking about defederating a right wing/libertarian instance/magaizine. I am not a fan of them (honestly, I consider that kind of right winger an enemy) but, IMO, it would be wrong to stifle someone's freedom of speech just because I disagree (strongly) with what they believe.
I can understand smaller instances doing it, but the problem is that we don't really have "middle scale" instances yet to fill that niche between what amount to very small friend/interest groups in a little microniche and the giant behemoth of either of the Lemmy instances or even the Beehaw instance.
There are room for smaller instances that mainly just want to pull down copies of information for their own little groups to discuss and they're a completely different type of community than something like lemmy.world, despite both of them still existing within the same technology framework.
Freedom of Speech is a right you have in regards to your government. They can’t stop you from saying something. Freedom of speech doesn’t mean freedom from consequences. If your a bigoted piece of trash, every community has the right to kick you out of their circle, just like you have the right to kick someone out of your home if they act in a way that you don’t agree with.
