What does this have to do with phone-based hotspots costing money unnecessarily?
It solves the problem of phone based hotspots costing money unnecessarily.
If you have internet over Ethernet you likely already have wifi. This post is complaining about the cost of tethering to cellular data plans where presumably no alternative Internet sources exist. Most people don't use wifi hotspots from their phone because they don't have a Wi-Fi router, they use the hotspot from their phone because they don't have other internet connections.
Fair enough, that would be a problem. It's pretty corrupt that Google is now in the pocket with the telecom sector.
Perhaps an open bridge between the cellular network and the access point is what's required. This would make the Raspberry Pi a 4G internet access point available over Ethernet and WiFi. One SIM with a decent data plan for the Pi and a smaller one for the phone might be a solution.
