Alright, I have to finally ask. What the heck is a .webp file? And why are half the images on lemmy that type of file?

[–] Nintendo 15 points 1 year ago (1 children)

it's an image file format that's a bit more space efficient with similar imagine quality.

You rock, thank you. I just looked it up (which I should have done in the first place). Seems good.
My problem is I can't share the webp memes via text lol. Probably cuz I'm old now.

No, that's a known issue with webp. It's supported by browsers and just about nothing else, so you'll need to manually convert it.

The Liftoff app has a setting to automatically convert .webp to .png.

Oh that's good to know, thank you my friend

https://developers.google.com/speed/webp/

It's a new image format that competes with JPEG and PNG. The image on this post is not a webp, it is a jpeg. The reason you see it as a webp file is because many web browsers convert jpeg's and png's to webm automatically.

Interesting. Thank you. So my main concern now would then be how do I get my sms to recognize it so I can continue trading memes?

[–] Emerald 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

If your SMS app doesn't support webp, there is nothing you can do about it. You could switch SMS apps or switch browsers or change your browser settings.

Sounds good, thanks!

it's a more optimized image file that lots of websites use, serving requires less bandwidth
