Correct, I'd say Trump is closer to Denethor. At least as he is portrayed in the movies, book-Denethor actually fought back against Sauron for decades and was driven insane by a Palantir (and Sauron influencing him through it just like Saruman).
Peter Thiel, who owns JD Vance, has a company called Palantir, just to add another layer to this joke.
