Rules (2024-08-30)
- This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
- No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
- Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
- No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
- Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
- If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
- Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
- Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
- No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
(This list may get expanded when necessary.)
We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.
If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.
If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

I'm so tired.
Why do we always descend into war?
Why do we have to group into 2 or 3 global power blocks repeatedly?
Why are people constantly cunts to each other?
Well, fighting back it the way to fix it, not apeasing dictators or letting them do bad things without repercussions.
We don't fight back, though.
We trade with China.
We trade with Israel.
Until there was a full-scale invasion we traded with Russia despite 2014 - 2022.
Where there's money to be made, ethics and morals are ignored. Just because we're moderately better than them with regards to rights doesn't mean we're good. We're just not as bad.
We are aligned with America, creating another giant power block. Another country that's a cunt to people.
Human rights abuses are being documented all over Europe from Italian farms to UK detention and deportation of refugees.
The state of the world is depressing and appears to be on a downhill trajectory. There's so many parallels to the rise of the Nazi party going on in multiple countries and so many people are oblivious to it. In their echo chambers of consumerism and "I've got mine".
I think I've had enough Internet for the day
Same, but it seems like a (too slow) uphill route IMO.
Russia is crashing down, Syria is getting kicked, Georgia is rebelling, the EU is starting to step up its game...
Gotta see the good things too man.
Hereis my take: Democracies tend to be able to peacefully coexist, make compromise and cooperate. Because most people doesn't want to go to war. Most people want prosperity and share it rather than die for it. As long as there are non-democracies or poorly working democracies around, you're gonna have to fight to not loose what you have. Concentrate power and you are more likely to have to go to war. Cause the few peope with unchecked power does not care about you or your grandma.
Only when the powerhungry feel emboldened enough, do they start conflicts. So it is a prerequsite to have to group up with someone, to messure up against whoever they intend to steal from.
From my perspective; it is generally democracies, that tend to more reflect the will of the people, that are constantly defending against oportunistic dictators that want to shape the world to exploit their- and others peope, to their personal benefit.
In prosperous times, dictators are not so aggressive, but in less prosporous times, they tend to need to start conflicts. They have nothing to personally loose from it. If they have nukes, they don't even have to fear assasination when they mess with everyone on the globe.
Are you aware that huge crimes against humanity, genocide, wars, heck even dictators and nice things like that are produced by ... democracies?
Because if you have a gun and no scruples it becomes easy to take the things of people with no gun. Positions of power attract people with no scruples and can provide guns (that you don't even have to fire yourself). The only known effective means of defending against them is by making sure your country has guns (on the national level) and a government with scruples.
Does it suck? Yes. Do we have an alternative? None that works.
We are humans, it's in our nature. It's something primitive and core in our essence that comes from basic things in our survival instincts: pattern recognition and tribalism.
We'll never not have war.
