I'm working on a build list for a Linux gaming rig. It's my first build so I'd welcome any comments or tips!

I'm mostly looking to run games like the Total War series. I'm not obsessed with getting peak performance, I'm angling more for a reasonable value mid-range build.

Linux support is essential, I won't buy any Nvidia products.

UK market if that makes a difference.

List below...

  • CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X 3.7 GHz 6-Core Processor (£139.99 @ Amazon UK)
  • Motherboard: MSI B550 GAMING GEN3 ATX AM4 Motherboard (£89.97 @ Ebuyer)
  • Memory: Corsair Vengeance LPX 32 GB (2 x 16 GB) DDR4-3600 CL18 Memory (£64.98 @ Amazon UK)
  • Storage: Samsung 980 Pro 1 TB M.2-2280 PCIe 4.0 X4 NVME Solid State Drive (£84.24 @ Amazon UK)
  • Video Card: PowerColor Fighter Radeon RX 6650 XT 8 GB Video Card (£239.00 @ Computer Orbit)
  • Case: Corsair 4000D Airflow ATX Mid Tower Case (£74.50 @ Computer Orbit)
  • Power Supply: Thermaltake Toughpower GX2 600 W 80+ Gold Certified ATX Power Supply (£101.62 @ Amazon UK) Total: £794.30

Looking for First Build Advice (ca.pcpartpicker.com)
submitted 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago) by [email protected] to c/buildapc

Never built a PC before, but I've got some tech awareness, LTT videos, Digital Foundry, that kind of thing. I've also helped friends build PCs, but I've never actually pulled the trigger and built my own PC, so I'm hoping to get some experienced eyes on this thing to help out! I based this build off PcPartPickers default "AMD build", and replaced many of the parts one by one.

Budget is about 1500$ CAD, and I'm hoping to use this thing as a living room gaming PC. I've also got a Series X, so I'm mostly looking to run emulators at high settings, mod some games, play some of the Sony exclusives that hit PC, some non-crossplay multiplayer, that kind of thing.

Looking to get something upgradable, that I can build onto in the future as well. Thus my paying a little more for AM5, for example.

Please let me know if I'm buying anything dumb, or making any missteps like not getting enough VRAM for modern system emulators or something. Incredibly nervous and excited about finally doing this! Thanks so much for any help you can give!

Troubleshooting Help:

What is your parts list?

CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 7950x

Cooler: Corsair H115i RGB PRO XT

Motherboard: ASRock X670E Taichi

RAM: G.Skill Trident Z5 DDR5-6000 SL C32 DC - 64GB

GPU: XFX SPEEDSTER MERC 310 Radeon RX 7900 XTX

NVMe: Samsung 980 PRO 1 TB

NVMe: WD_BLACK SN750 1TB

NVMe: Corsair MP400 1TB

SSD: SanDisk Ultra 3D 2 TB

SSD: Samsung SATA 870 QVO 4TB

SSD: Samsung SATA 860 QVO 1TB

SSD: Samsung SATA 860 QVO 1TB

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB

PSU: be quiet! Straight Power 11 Platinum 1200W

Case: Corsair 7000D AIRFLOW

OS: Arch Linux

Describe your problem. List any error messages and symptoms. Be descriptive.

My PC shuts down shortly after the Unreal Engine logo when starting Hell Let Loose. I already found out that this doesn't happen when using a fresh install of the game. It only happens after the second time of starting it. I didn't change any settings between the first and the second launch of the game.

journalctl doesn't show any logs related to my issue.

The PC just turns off like someone had pulled it's power plug. After that, it won't turn on for some time. Unplugging the power cord for ~2 minutes gets it to turn back on again. Unplugging for ~1 minute doesn't fix the issue.

Every other game is fine, running CPU and GPU at 100% for extended periods of time is fine. This only happens with Hell Let Loose and only after the second time of launching the game.

My motherboard has two buttons for power and reset, normally those are lit when the PC is turned off. When I trigger my issue, those LED's aren't lit.

My temperatures are totally fine, there isn't much dust built up inside the PC. The whole system is a little over a year old.

List anything you've done in attempt to diagnose or fix the problem.

System is up to date, including BIOS, Kernel and all packages. I stress tested CPU and GPU separately and at the same time, my issue didn't appear.

Alright, that's all the details I have until now. Does anyone know what could be the cause for this? Thank you very much in advance.

EDIT: Thank you everyone, I've decided to replace my PSU. I've generally been quite unsatisfied with be quiet! (their fans also kinda suck). I Will report back if that fixes my issue.

EDIT 2: Replacing my PSU fixed my issue. Never buying from be quiet! again.

Hi All,

I have a 2-3 years Old computer and have a little budget for an upgrade.

As I have a 512 Go M.2 SSD, I was thinking about ugrading. But not sure what to do.

  • Buy a 2To Samsung 990 Pro with Heatsink
  • Buy a SATA SSD I would use for storage and Keep my 512Go M.2 for my OS
  • Buy a 1To M.2 SSd and a SATA SSD

What's the best Idea? Anything Else that would be worth upgrading:

AMD Ryzen 5 2600 3400Mhz MSI B450-A PRO MAX GeForce RTX 2080 16 GB of RAM Samsung SSD 970 EVO Plus 500GB

I'm basicaly only playing Apex, other small games, and doing admin stuff. Thank you for your help

Ryzen 7900X or 7900 (self.buildapc)
submitted 1 year ago by HansSlonzok to c/buildapc

Now Ryzen 7900X is cheaper than 7900 what is weird. Is it possible to run 7900X undervolted to reach the low power consumption of Ryzen 7900? If yes, is it better to buy this cheaper 7900X or 7900 which has 65W TDP?

I grabbed a copy of the "High Refresh Rate Build" from PCMasterRace and wanted feedback.

I've not built a new PC in many years and last I heard was the NewEgg was trash and unreliable now. Is it decent again, or is it worth paying more to get it elsewhere?

Also, is there room for more storage? If I bought two of the SSDs, would there be room?

Other components decent?

And, finally, my so wants an RBG case, so any recommendations on one of those that would fit this stuff would be great.

I need suggestions for a build (using AMD GPU) that will run AAA titles at about 60fps but at high or ultra graphics quality and I am not interested in playing at 1440p at 144hz, although I would like to if I could.

I consider that the only drawback is that I am interested in playing PS3 and Switch games emulated, so, I need a good CPU and that will increase the price although I would prefer to have a bottleneck by the CPU than by the GPU.

Thanks and sorry if details are missing but I had written a much longer post but there was a blackout and everything was deleted, and I'm too lazy to write it again.

Considering in some parts I have seen the Ryzen 9 5900X and 6700XT 10GB as good options.

Recently I saw this RTX 4060 Ti by ASUS with an m.2 slot, it's a sound idea, why waste 8 lanes (by putting 8 lanes GPU in 16 lanes slot). But I'm wondering about homemade solution, I found one of those passthroughs, it should work theoretically, adding 2 additional m.2 slots to the system, obviously it won't work in most PC cases without a pcie riser. Anyone tried that? any success? in my case (pun not intended?) my motherboard only supports 8x8x bifurcation so i could use only one m.2 device but on motherboards supporting 8x4x4x bifurcation both m.2 slots could be usable

EDIT: just got a bios update that says "Support graphics card with M.2 storage" and it gave me 8x4x4x bifurcation option, lol

My motherboard provides 4x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports for rear I/O and another 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports for front I/O (through the header), but my chipset only supports 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports. Where is the support for the other ports coming from?

Motherboard Wikipedia
Motherboard rear I/O: 2x USB 2.0 ports, 4x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, 2x USB 3.2 Gen2 portsMotherboard headers: 4x USB 2.0 ports, 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports Wikipedia B450 chipset: 6x USB 2.0 ports, 2x USB 3.2 Gen1 ports, 2x USB 3.2 Gen2 ports

The motherboard is an ASRock B450M Steel Legend

I basically use my computer for nothing gpu intensive and have it in a standard atx case.

I have an i7-8700 and am wondering how small I can get it.

I see those nuc computers and wonder if it could be transformed into a system like that.

Or is micro-atx the smallest I can go?

As per title. It has 2 DP ports and one hdmi. One DP out is broken. I know I won't ever need al 3 ports so it's not an issue for me. Only thing is, I have no idea what the cause of the issue could be and if it could "spread" in the future to all ports and render the gpu unusable. Maybe if someone has had experience with this situation before and could chime in? Or if you know the usual causes of this issue and if they could likely worsen or that's unlikely.

Thanks

I need to know what both the connectors are for this power supply, and if possible what to search for when I am looking up cables.

The cables from be quiet! are in the links below, however they are out of stock when I try to order them.

Would I need a better mobo for the 7800x3d? More expensive ram?

There is a version of the PG Riptide board with a vertical M.2 E-key slot for wifi (under the IO shield). Unfortunately the availability of the wifi version is quite poor.

Would it be feasible to add the m.2 slot to the non-wifi version. Looks like the non-wifi version lacks the metal holder and probably also the board socket. I was thinking it might be possible to solder a compatible E-key header on the board and buy a suitable holder/bracket.

Haven't found a good picture of the location of the wifi card though, as it's behind the IO shield. Probably an idiotic idea though.

Edit: went for the MSI B650m-A WiFi instead. First PCIe slot is a bit lower than the others, giving more space between gpu and cpu/psu. Additionally it comes with USB 3.2 gen2 front I/O, whereas the Asrock has gen 1 only

Looking to upgrade my trusty 1070Ti. I use my pc for RPGs (Borderlands, Hogwarts Legacy) , VR fps (Alyx, Arizona Sunshine) and VR simracing (F1 23).

Deciding between ASUS Dual 4070 (@ €600) or ASUS TUF 7800XT.

Benchmarks don't really tell the whole story because they rarely include DLSS3, but the games I play don't really support that anyway. TUF is a better cooler, but bulkier.

I can also just not buy anything and wait for the 4070 Super to come along.

Thoughts?

Got a young guy that needs a reasonable used laptop, in the $2-300 range. Looking for smooth but not spectacular graphics, and a 15" screen or better. Preferably with 2 drive slots so he can have an NVME or other SSD for the OS and a large rust drive for installing games. It's going to be plugged in when used, and weight isn't a great concern, it's just for travelling with.

Any suggestions on what to look for on eBay?

Custom Spec Laptop (self.buildapc)
submitted 1 year ago by cynar to c/buildapc

I'm upgrading to a new laptop (unfortunately, a desktop is not viable for me right now). It's a VR gaming machine, with some potential work with machine learning (me learning about it). I've got a system option, but it's into price flinching territory, and wanted a once over, from those more in the know.

Are there any obvious flaws in it, and is it reasonable for the price?

  • Display: 1 x 16.0" IPS | 2560×1600 px (16:10) | 240 Hz | G-SYNC | 95 % sRGB

  • Graphic Card: 1 x NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 Laptop | 12 GB GDDR6

  • Processor: 1 x Intel Core i9-13900HX

  • Ram: 2 x 16 GB (32 GB) DDR5-5600 Samsung

  • SSD (M.2): 1 x 1 TB M.2 Samsung 990 PRO | PCIe 4.0 x4 | NVMe

  • Keyboard: 1 x Mechanical keyboard with CHERRY MX ULP Tactile switches

  • WLAN: 1 x Intel Wi-Fi 6E AX211 | Bluetooth 5.3

It prices up at €2,809.31 (£2,484.57 or $3,130.80) including shipping and taxes.

It's worth noting the system comes with an optional external water cooling system, so the CPU and GFX are less thermally limit, when it's plugged in. It also has a proper keyboard, not the normal membrane ones.

What are people's opinions? It is a reasonable price, or am I way too far up the diminishing returns slope?

The list of components i've compiled is as follows:

-A corsair 4000D airflow case -Ryzen 5 3600 (might be a slight bottleneck, but i have a 3900X, which is basically the same but double the cores and it barely gets any load during gaming) -BeQuiet Pure Rock 2 cooler -Corsair Vengeance LPX DDR4 2x8gb 3600mhz -BeQuiet System Power 9 CM 600W -ASUS Prime B550-M A -3060 TI, manufacturer doesn't really matter -2TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD (haven't decided on a manufacturer yet, but likely to be crucial, corsair or WD)

for context, she's going to be using a 1440p 144hz monitor and she's planning to play games like Warzone or some of the newer CoD games

i have built multiple PCs roughly in this region of performance before, and they've run great so far.

appreciate any suggestions!

I am trying to pass audio from a laptop to a desktop via a headphone jack from the laptop to a line in on the desktop but it provides constant static. I have tried two different aux cords (new). I currently think I might need an USB to Audio Jack Sound Card Adapter but don't want to buy this too and have to return both if it does not work. Do I need it to be a line out and not a "Headphone Jack" or a sound card?

Thanks

Got a strange one here, and im sure im missing somthing simple.

Buddy of mine did a mobo, ram, cpu upgrade on his own and is running into some issues with the PCIe 5.0x16 slot not detecting his 2080 in windows device manager. Strange part is it works 100% fine in the slot below thats the 4.0x4 slot.

Specs: 14700k cpu MSI z790 pro-a wifi mobo Zotac 2080 Ddr5 6200mhz ram (currently just set to stock without xmp until i figure out the pcie issue) Win11 home 1 sata6 ssd samsung, 1 m.2 nvme ssd samsung. 1000w seasonic psu

I tried swapping the bios settings for the pcie lanes to gen 4 instead of auto.

Confirmed with him the connections to power and board are well established thrice.

Mobo is on the latest firmware from msi.

Ez debug leds dont show any VGA/display errors in either slots.

GPU has power and fans spin up whilein the 5.0x16 slot.

Im honestly stumped on this one and what to try next or look out for. Have a feeling im probably missing somthing simple here.

MSI support hasn't been responsive so im posting here as a last attempt to gather ideas.

Edit: buddys not the brightest star. He wasn't confirming the bios changes, he was just exiting out... swapped the pcie setting from auto to gen4 and made sure he saved them. Working good now.

The timing is either amazing or the electrical storm this afternoon fried something. I have the 2721dgf now it turns black for 2 seconds before resuming randomly. My other 4k dell monitor is fine

Any solutions? Repair or black Friday?

hi. i have broken my cpu by incorrectly plugging it into the socket (socket 1200). is it slightly bent in two different corners, as seen in the photos - https://imgur.com/a/Id3LH3T

at first i wasn't getting any reaction from the power button at all. after realizing what happened and correctly repositioning the cpu, the motherboard now starts, , fans and harddrives spool up, but i am not getting any signal on the on-board graphic card.

was anyone in similar situation? am i done and do i have to throw it away? is there a chance to fix it by forcibly bending it back?

thank you for any tips.

It turns out I can do fuckall with my nh-d15 on my new setup. GPU wont fit full stop. Im very skeptical with trying to purchase nh-d15s this time around, as Im pretty sure I wont be able to use the offset mounting kit for it without running into the same issues that need that cooler to begin with.

Is there a cooler that is just straight up for am5 and cools like a champ? No fucking around with offsets and such. Can be AIO for all I care.

Hello, any help would be greatly appreciated.

It seems like what's happening is I'm at the GPU's limit, but I don't think I should be. I have one monitor always greyed out in the display settings or nvidia control panel. I can disconnect one of the other monitors, to then extend to that one. I've found other people with the same issue and it was usually due to the GPU's limit (the 4070Ti as I understand it can handle pushing 8k at 60hz). My setup is:

1 3840x2160x144hz (DP)

1 1920x1080x60hz (DP to HDMI)

1 1600x900x60hz (DP to DVI)

1 800x480x60hz (HDMI)

Which should mean I'm well within the limit, however the only thing that seems to make my pc display to all monitors, is changing my main monitor from 144 to 120hz. So it's like my computer thinks it's over the limit with 144hz when it shouldn't be. I'm also using a Corsair LS100 for the ambient lighting around the main monitor, is that also taking up the gpu (I don't think so because I turned it off and still had the issue)? I always assumed the software for that just looked at the colors already on the screen. Or maybe there's too many variations in connection type, resolution, refresh rate? I did try swapping the 900p monitor for another 1080p with a DP so it wasn't using the DP to DVI cable and had the same resolution as my other monitor, but still had the same issue.

No idea why I can't display all 4 at once when it seems like the GPU should be more than capable. Any advice would be a huge help, thank you!
