Appeasement is a famously poor strategy when dealing with bullies, that's 100%.

However, if you're referring to Nevil Chamberlain and the "peace in our time" deal with Hitler regarding Czechoslovakia, that's one of the most misunderstood "teachable moments" in history.

The central concept of "appeasing" Hitler relies on the false premise that England (or France, or Together) were in a position to do anything about German tanks rolling East. Chamberlain had received intelligence shortly before this meeting that they were absolutely not. England and France were helpless to protect Poland after all. And for months existed in an abortive "phony war" after the official deceleration.

Also you have to consider British public opinion about another war on the continent with Germany when most could still remember 1914-1918. So not only was Chamberlain helpless to prevent Hitler's invasion, his political mandate was to avoid war.

Chamberlain's reputation for being weak and bowing to Hitler's demands is undeserved. But worse, is often used as a rational for aggression or as a cudgel to dismiss diplomacy.

I'm convinced a major reason legacy media is so despised is because of the phony balcony "objectivity" standard. Holding journalists to an impossible standard just results in them lying to our faces day after day, for years.

This is especially obvious during Christmas because they all have to pretend to believe in Santa and it's exactly the same vibe.

This isn't because they think they'll loose, they're trying to appease the ogre before it demands a virgin worth way more than $15mil.

This has existed for decades in the form of a game show called "The Price is Right". It's obscene that they break away to commercials when the show itself is just an endless parade of consumer products presented by beautiful humans.

Its funny because even when it comes to unearned accolades, he's still second to Obama.

Inflation, Argentina’s perpetual scourge and Milei’s top priority upon coming to office, slowed from a monthly rate of 25.5% in December 2023 to just 2.7% in October — its lowest level in three years.

Why is Argentina's inflation measured monthly when the annual figure is the usual standard? Several outlets have reported this figure for almost a month now and I'm starting to wonder if this is just a case of reporters printing what the politicians say verbatim, or intentionally trying to mislead. Argentina's annual inflation rate is 166% as of November (https://tradingeconomics.com/argentina/inflation-cpi)

As funny as it would be to make "bitching Betty" the fist astronaut on Mars, you've got a pretty tight weight and power budget to add a whole system to prevent this one outcome.

IDK about GMC, but the Ford and Chevy work vans I've driven have serious bumpers. Nothing like the spongy decorations that cars come with now. We're talking solid steel and welded to the frame.

What's changed isn't the FBI's power, it's whom it's power is targeting. Important people are in danger of being subjected to the system. And those important people expect me to give one little shit.

Remember, for Patel to match his predecessors' abuse of power it will not be enough to arrest Liz Cheney, he'll have to assassinate her.

I'm afraid that mutual defense isn't as iron clad as you think. If Article 5 of NATO ever gets triggered you'll get a masterclass on weaseling out of obligations. It's ironic because Ukraine may already be receiving the kind of support a full NATO member is entitled to.

When Florida changed it's law to allow ex-felons to vote, I remember reading that the legislature put as many roadblocks as they could. Felons must complete all sentences, fines, and restitution before they can vote.

So any sentence or sanction that can't be fulfilled by November should exclude him from Florida's rolls, right?

Yes, I think a creationist is closer to the truth than the social Darwinist. We can at least agree that the former does far less harm to society.

My calendar application changed the method to add events and broke my workflow.

My workaround: I typed basic schedule info into Perplexity and have it convert the data to a CSV file and import it.
