Coming up with novel indicators is not enough. "GDP" isn't simply about measuring economic growth, it's about labeling the desirable feature for the economic elites. The obsession with growth predates GDP, it even predates Capitalism as it's based on the much older "tradition" of imperialistic expansionism.

One of the reasons "degrowth" is useful is because it's antithetical to capitalism and capitalism's growth imperative, so it can't be co-opted by capitalism. When you promote "regenerative", you promote a term that has already been co-opted, most infamously now with the "regenerative grazing" pseudoscience.

For instance, even in a doomsday scenario (for them) of the French Revolution, the rich will have personal security guards. These people will be paid very well (relative to the general population), which will keep them loyal enough. They will eat at secure restaurants (similar deal), and enjoy activities in secure locations.

In a collapse scenario, their money will be worthless.

It's certainly part of the catabolic stage in the system's decay. Due to many reasons, both at the input side and the "drowning in waste" side (example: GHGs waste causing climate destabilization), growth is going to falter which means that the "sharing" strategy of the rich, of the oligarchs, is going to stop working. You may know it as "grow the pie" (instead of "share the pie"). The rich get richer, the rest get poorer, and there are going to be a lot of poor people. That means a lot of desperate people and a lot of people with nothing left to lose.

What you have to watch out for is perhaps two strategies that can stop this:

  1. Scapegoating: vulnerable minorities and more. The rich of a certain ethnicity may become the scapegoats, instead of .... you know, ALL of that class. This would be a misdirection of attention.
  2. Jingoism, chauvinism and various forms of ultra-nationalism. This would be a misdirection of violence... instead of "punching up", it becomes "punching the foreign threat", which means war.
  3. Combined 1 & 2. It's usually called fascism.

On a related note, I really liked the recent season of "Arcane" (both seasons are great). https://www.imdb.com/title/tt11126994/

It's not really an option. The real question is if people will be fine with promoting famine (could be far away) instead of eating rice and beans.

Here's an example from about a century ago: https://www.bostonreview.net/articles/troy-vettese-do-not-let-them-eat-meat/

You don't even know what those words mean. Sigh.

Oh, they have no way to stop it with incremental regulations. Incredible monitoring would be practical for them, but the inescapable part of biosecurity for animal raising is that the animals are killed (before they're killed at slaughter). It becomes a regular and constant loss. Without monitoring, and with regular bailouts, what you end up is a system that breeds massive numbers of soon-to-be-killed animals in order to fill up holes in the ground with their corpses. The obvious fact that everyone is shying away from is that the sector needs to be shrunk or closed down, much like the wild animal farms in China (see: SARS-CoV-2).

Soybean meal is a coproduct.

If you could stop eating up meat industry disinformation, that would be great.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) — the agency responsible for the reintroduction — says they did not consider individual wolf personalities when selecting wolves, as they contend “it is impossible to know that type of information.”

Some eugenics shit right there, but this isn't the first time animal breeders try to control "temperament".

The reason that CPW wanted to select wolves that hadn’t attacked livestock, says Reading, is because “it’s no question” that opposition to the reintroduction is primarily coming from ranchers. Historically that’s been true too: gray wolves were native to Colorado until they were eradicated in the 1940s, because they kept killing livestock and game.

The villains are the ones who vilified wolves.

I see, you're one of those who are disinformed by the meat industry PR departments to believe that the soy feed is a "byproduct".

Be careful.

It is hard ask for the concept of care to be broadened to include care for earth systems. Even if there is broad recognition of repairing and caring for things, the term care invokes for most the narrow conception of caring for people, and care work to be the provision of assistance to those who are ill, disabled or frail6. If however, we substitute the term stewardship for care, then we move towards a slightly different way of understanding. Stewardship is caring about the world we live in all its complexity and caring for every part of it in whatever state it is in. It not just caring to repair things once they are broken, it is to ensure things endure from the outset; it is not just caring to assist those in need, it is ensuring that community networks are strong and resilient so that difference can be supported and celebrated at all times; it is not caring to fix a food security system that is broken, it is about ensuring that food production skills and local availability of good food are strengthened at local levels; if is not just about supporting those who are care workers (for people or the environment) it is about strengthening neighbourhoods and communities so that members feel valued whatever their contributions might be. Stewardship is stressing caring about, which almost certainly will include caring for.

The Vatican has blocked discussions over women’s rights at the UN climate summit following a row over gay and transgender issues, sources have told BBC News.

Pope Francis’ representatives have aligned with Saudi Arabia, Russia, Iran, and Egypt to obstruct a deal which would have provided more support, including financial help, for women at the forefront of climate change, Colombia’s environment minister told the BBC.

Charities including ActionAid said it is crucial a deal is reached as the UN estimates women and girls currently make up 80% of those displaced by climate change.

The key result of our study, which was published in the peer-reviewed journal Environment, Development and Sustainability, was clear: In regions where climate change makes heavy storms and floods more common, households more frequently stop using and maintaining their toilets.

Toilet dysfunction, which temporarily prevents a toilet from flushing or from keeping human waste from entering the environment, is more frequent among households living in flood-prone regions during the rainy season. We found that for every point increase in the composite climate vulnerability index, toilet abandonment went up by 4%.

"We experienced very heavy rains two days ago, but the flood just started to rise when Magat Dam started releasing huge volumes of water," Valdepenas told AFP.

"Plus, our land is already saturated because of the consecutive typhoons hitting the area."

(Yes, this is about collapse.)

“It’s a dark day for Europe’s environmental credentials,” Julian Oram, policy director at nonprofit Mighty Earth, wrote in an email statement. “The inclusion of a new ‘no risk’ category will allow many countries to be considered risk-free, even if deforestation, degradation and illegal practices are still occurring.”
