Flickering like this usually occurs when the controller and lights are not using the same ground.

More pictures are always useful. Assuming the pins in the connector aren't bent out of shape, your issue sounds more like a problem with the game. A common issue is that some pins need to be reflowed on the rom and ram chips. Here is an example video of what I'm referring to https://youtu.be/Hg21VeFM-_Y

I would make sure to clean the cart and the slot. A quick way for the slot is to load up the cart contacts with ipa and insert it a few times. For the game itself, I'm a fan of using a white pencil easer, followed by ipa.

For the lines, it could be the contrast wheel is dirty. Adding a few drops of ipa and working the wheel could help, though long term deoxit would be better.

Beyond that, more pictures of the board would help.

Space and simplicity. There is not a lot of room in a GBA so a custom PCB would probably be needed from the start. Also the DMG display PCB is basically trash if the screen dies, which is all you need for this project. The GBA equivalent would need a donor motherboard.

Thanks. I was looking at these carts and thought about hard it would be to make something similar that you could use a old shell with. I recently made a SNES to Bluetooth adapter so the code was pretty similar. I really like projects that recycle parts like this.

It's crazy that there is even anything close in this election. The only hope at this point is if enough republicans get tired of all the "woke war" bullshit and the orange turd's multiple court cases that they just don't bother to vote. Political races are treated more like the Superbowl than an important part of our lives, so I just don't see them voting against "their team".

The Open Source Cartridge Reader is a great project for backing up saves (very useful for replacing dying batteries) and dumping roms. It's also great soldering practice. I chose to go the kit route from here since it was only slightly more expensive with the case than source everything yourself (no case kit: $125, with case: $145, source yourself: ~$134).

The Open Source Cartridge Reader is a great diy project for dumping your own roms and saves. If you order a kit with the surface mount components already installed, it's also a great beginner soldering project.

Fun project, now time to play some games.

The original issue turned out to be a faulty power supply. While I wait for those fuses to come in figured I would replace the board caps and add the GEM.

This is where I do all my repairs. Finally got it straightened out, which should last a whole 10 minutes.

When using the dock directly, I could not use this display since the image would appear too narrow. What I had to do is use a HDMI to component converter, set the dock 480p, then run that into a Gbscontrol. Now I could scale it properly for this display. The only downside is in 480p mode, the dock has small artifacts present in the upper right of the image. Could't get downscaling to work, which would have gotten rid of the artifacts.

Modern power module to replace the old rusty one, cleaned edge connector, fixed cracks in the case, new coat of paint, and metallic stickers.

Used a combination of jb plastic weld and wood filler to fix the cracks and gashes in the shell. Gave the two halves a new coat of paint and ordered metallic stickers off Etsy.
