Twin Peaks season 3 episode 8 comes to mind. It might not be something I want to watch over and over but it's probably the most incredible thing I've ever seen on broadcast TV. A surrealism short film in the context of a series that both has a self contained story and speaks to the broad narrative of the series. Krzysztof Penderecki's Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima, Nine in Nails, The Platters' "My Prayer" on the soundtrack? Amazing! Still to this day I can not believe the artistic freedom allowed by Showtime to create this. Jaw was on the floor for the entire episode. I've felt for a long time that nothing could actually be new/shocking/different on broadcast TV. This changed my mind. Nothing has even been close imho.

Creating music is easy. Creating music that you like can be difficult.

There are several different ways of going about this and you should really think about your goals. If you want to perform on a stage you should consider going to an open mic format. There are more than just a people playing acoustic guitar. A lot of people play electronic music or whatever they want. It's essentially a blind date for people that want to make music and share it.

Set a schedule don't just play whenever you feel like it. Even if you are just learning things during that time. It will make it so in the time you aren't practicing you develop ideas. And when inspiration hits have a way to quickly get it down on a voice memo.

Don't be precious about completely songs. People who think too much about "the song" never get anything done. You can take your time but let it go. You can come back to songs later if you really want to but most people get a better sense of what they want to do after completing more songs. Just say " I'm writing a song today" and then do it. Make it simple. After you have that song finished it'll seem less daunting because you've already done it. Weezer's blue album had over a hundred songs written for it and they only have 10 on the album.

There is nothing wrong with tribute and cover bands. If it gets you on stage then go for it. Chances are you'll be playing music you love with other like-minded people who would play your songs when you aren't doing covers. The people who show up are usually excited because they know the songs and it gets you a foot in the door with the venue if they also have live music nights. You can always play a few originals. People typically won't care.

Good luck. Party on.

Thank you. Thank you very much. It's Gordon. Gordon Cole! And my shocks are on fire.

I'd play underworld. I think I've played most the TR games but I skipped that.

Very happy to see this. I completely understand the view not to use money to restore but I think people outside France should understand how much this church is more than a religious symbol and has become a symbol of national identity. It is literally the center of where all roads are measured in Paris and France. It is the place where the Parisii people decided to plant roots and took the towns people almost 200 years to complete and is one of the oldest (standing) most impressive gothic cathedrals in France. Sainte-chapelle was built in 6 years for reference. We like to think the Effiel Tower is the symbol of France but Notre Dame by many is seen as the most important structure in French history. I guess what I'm saying is of all the buildings this and the Effiel tower are the two that France will never let go to ruin.

Can we close up shop already? It's been a steady decline in viewers. I once was a huge fan but these endless parodies of other TV shows are scraping the bottom.

I just realized that the most obvious choice for new players is Stardew Valley. I never really thought about it. Even newer Mario or Minecraft could be a barrier. Controlling cameras can be confusing and difficult for newer players. Stardew doesn't require you to be good at twin stick mechanics (although that is used for the slingshot if you want to do that). It gives you lots of encouragement and is very straightforward with missions. The screen is never cluttered with junk or pop-ups. It gets more complex as you progress but you'll never be "stuck". The fishing and fighting games teaches how to use button control and timing. Everything feels rewarding like you are making progress. Not to mention it's pretty universally loved and will run on almost any PC and is available on all consoles or tablet or mobile devices

Oh I know. But minor threat and black flag used to have these neoNazis show up at their shows. I think he acknowledged that once he realized they wanted to use his frustration for oppression they stopped playing it. I think it was in, "this band could be your life". Much like X hating the fans who cheered on "Johnny hit and run Pauline" from "decline of the western civilization". It's crazy how people twist things.

For some of us. Yes the game is incredible. The detail to menus, maps, management and playing control is very very good. Now I won't try and change any minds. The game is very "slow" and isolating but it's an entirely different mood than most games. It's like the film 2001. It can be a slow methodical well crafted movie but maybe not as exciting as say Star Wars. Kojima games always seem to take 10-20+ hours to "get momentum" but I've always enjoyed them.

[–] flux 4 points 1 month ago

Yah I think you are right. More articles that suggest Kojima just had a 5 year deal with Sony. I could see them negotiating IP rights if sales aren't met or something else. Just glad they own it. Must feel good. "On November 9, 2024, the five-year anniversary of the game's launch on PlayStation 4, Kojima Productions announced that they had re-acquired the intellectual property (IP) rights to Death Stranding from Sony Interactive Entertainment, and that they had planned to bring the game to additional platforms, coinciding with the immediate launch of Director's Cut on the Microsoft Store for Windows, Xbox Series X/S consoles, and the Amazon Luna cloud gaming service."

[–] flux 14 points 1 month ago (2 children)

This article is so confusing. Pretty sure Kojima productions always owned the game/ip. Sony was first to publish then 505 for PC versions. I very much doubt they handed any IP over to Sony or 505 games except to publish on platforms most likely they had a clause they couldn't do anything with the IP to interfere with the publisher sales like a movie, etc. The contract for 505/Sony to death standing most likely expired and now Kojima has other options for what to do with the series. This might be splitting hairs but I think it important to point out Kojima is not going to give any creative IPs away ever again to shitty companies that want to bastardize his ideas.

[–] flux 3 points 1 month ago (1 children)

Sure but I think it is less immediate. In music we have to make a decision if they are speaking about themselves nonfiction or fiction and in a book or movie we assume they are creating fictional character.

Tom Waits continues his transition that was started in Swordfishtrombones with his 9th outing Rain Dogs in 1985. Some call it his best work and a pivotal move from the singer songwriter’s previous material before he leans into the cathartic carnival barker of bone machine and beyond. A loose concept album about "the urban dispossessed" of New York City, Rain Dogs is generally considered the middle album of a trilogy that includes Swordfishtrombones and Franks Wild Years.

The Jesus and Mary Chain’s debut album, Psychocandy, is considered to be one of the most influential albums of all time. Released in 1985, the album helped to define the shoegaze genre, characterized by its use of distorted guitars, feedback, and lush melodies. Surprisingly Psychocandy was a critical and commercial success upon its release. It reached number 31 on the UK Albums Chart and was certified Gold by the BPI. It is now considered to be one of the most important albums of the 1980s alternative rock / noise rock / indie rock scene.

Psychonauts was always one of those games I was meaning to play ever since it came out. I've played most of the double fine titles but I started it and it didn't instantly click so I put it down and never got back to it. The second one came out and I thought alright time to go for it. Wow! What a debut from double fine! Clever and fun mechanics, well defined characters, engaging story and actually laugh out loud moments! If you have kids the game dialogue is snappy like a Pixar movie. I made it to the tower and just can't wait to see what happens next. There are a few small things like camera angles or controls that can be a little frustrating after all it's almost a 20 year old game but if do yourself a favor and grab it for $2 on steam or Xbox store right now if you think you might like it. I've already got #2 in the queue.

Strange Cargo 3 is the third album in William Orbit's Strange Cargo series. It was released in 1992 and features a mix of electronica, ambient, and world music. The album was a critical and commercial success, reaching number 12 in the UK charts.

The album's title is a reference to the cargo cult phenomenon, which is a belief that by imitating the actions of technologically advanced cultures, one can achieve similar results. Orbit has said that he was inspired by the cargo cult phenomenon, and he wanted to create an album that was a "cargo cult of electronica."

The album features a variety of guest musicians, including Beth Orton, Divine Bashim, and Jah Wobble. The album also features a number of unusual instruments, such as the theremin, the sitar, and the kora.

Listen: https://songwhip.com/kate-bush/hounds-of-love-1985

Hounds of Love is the fifth studio album by English singer-songwriter Kate Bush, released on 16 September 1985 by EMI Records. It was a commercial success and marked a return to the public eye for Bush after the relatively low sales of her previous album, 1982's The Dreaming. The album's lead single, "Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God)", became one of Bush's biggest hits, reaching number 3 in the UK upon release and later giving Bush her second number 1 UK single in June 2022. The album's first side produced three further singles, "Cloudbusting", "Hounds of Love", and "The Big Sky".

The album was a critical and commercial success, and is considered one of Bush's best albums. It has been praised for its innovative production, Bush's vocal performances, and its exploration of themes such as love, loss, and the natural world. In 2011, Hounds of Love was ranked number 22 on Q magazine's list of the "50 Best Albums of the 1980s". In 2012, it was voted number 28 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

The album is divided into two halves: the first side, "Hounds of Love", is a rock-oriented concept album about a woman who escapes from her suburban life and embarks on a journey of self-discovery. The second side, "The Ninth Wave", is a more atmospheric and experimental piece that tells the story of a woman who is shipwrecked and stranded at sea.

Hounds of Love is a highly ambitious and eclectic album that showcases Bush's wide range of musical and artistic talents. It is a landmark album in her career and one of the most important albums of the 1980s.
