yeah I love Asimov but the quote is stupid. What is a slave supposed to do to it's master? Write a strongly worded letter? Beg for others to save them?

Violence absolutely makes sense when there's no diplomatic solution and unfortunately quarter into the 21st century - where we should have personal robots and moon bases - that is still a pretty big issue.

We have the solution and it's not very hard. Have social workers maintain these areas. It's really not that expensive, employs people, builds important social vibe and allows you to have your benches.

It's a solved problem.

Some good news! I can't believe that Tesla shareholders approved this when all Tesla indicators essentially form a giant mount of downward facing red arrows at that time.

It's hard to believe that I was about to buy a Tesla just 8 years ago, and today I can not cringe when I see the brand. I hope someone does real market research on this, but the downfall of the company has been nothing short of fascinating.

Nah not a good comparison. Once there's market people will find a way to easily corrupt this. Remember that this is a 3 way interaction: government, private company and private citizen - the opportunities for bypass are basically endless here. You are comparing it with a 2 way market between government and private citizen which has no incentive to break the system.

For something so menial like social media? That's equivalent of tying your shoelaces in their eyes. I'm willing to bet you real money that this would be <1% of teenagers. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if this would have the opposite effect.

I'd really like to see a teenager who'd say "yes parent, I'll not use Instagram because you told me not to". People who pushed this law are so senile they frankly forgot what teenagers even are.

It's technologically doable

I'd disagree here. Sure in theory you could design some system that authenticates every user on every connection but in practice it would be impossible to maintain without complete authoritarian oversight like North Korea. Even closed authoritarian countries fail to achieve this (like Iran or China).

This would cost billions of not trillions in implementation, oversight overhead and economic product loss. That money would be much more effective in carrot approach of supporting mental health institutions and promoting wholesome shared culture, anti bullying campaigns etc.

It's not a new problem either. We know for a fact that the latter is the better solution and yet here we are...

So even in perfect scenario where this ban "works" it would still have zero intended effect as teens can consume all of that rubbish but not talk back and can jolly continue any harm on "allowed apps" like wtf is even this supposed to do lmao

The fact that people even considered this with a straight face, discussed it and passed it is just indicative how tech illiterate we've become.

[–] drmoose 2 points 2 weeks ago

it's not a problem that can be solved by tech.

if you think AI software will be able to differentiate between a 15 year old and 16 year old then I have this cool bridge in Brooklyn that you might be interested in.

This is delusional to the point where it feels like we're literally devolving.

I wonder what Lemmings are thinking of this device. I admire the innovation but just don't see how this would be used in practice outside of memes.

Most interesting part of the article:

"Our focus is on transforming our biggest franchises from largely console and PC-based with 3-4 year release schedules to include more always-on gameplay through live services, multiplatform, and free-to-play extensions, with the goal of having more players spending more time on more platforms. U

Ultimately, we want to drive engagement and monetization over longer cycles and at higher levels where per specific capabilities we're currently under scale, and see significant opportunity to generate greater post-purchase revenue"

What a major turn-off ngl.

Ad free Facebook and Instagram is officially on. I'm trying to stay open minded but honestly it's too expensive especially with this sneaky account center rule unless you're in an unfortunate position where you need to spend a lot of time on these platforms.

Meta sneakily introduced "Platform Integrity Attestation API" which basically calls home to see whether the user has a valid license to play.

This means that to run apps user has to have online connection to perform an integrity test. Whether it's only a test on launch or continues call home like Denuvo-like DRMs is not yet clear. This could also mean that modified headsets could fail to pass this test essentially closing down the device for modifications that could damage "platform integrity". Not all details are clear yet but this doesn't look good.

Currently it's optional and up to app developers to enable it.

So, apparently Pulsar Timing Arrays work and something important was discovered that'll be announced in few days.

This might sound like a bunch of space-nothing but just like radio waves, discovering gravitation waves could open up a lot of new posibilities in space observation. Though, in practice producing gravitation waves takes absurd amounts of energy so we'll not be applying this on earth any time soon.

Android browsers can already add pages to home screen but Hermit takes this even futher.

It has significantly better UX with frameless and full screen modes. You can bookmark pages, so on Lemmy you can quickly bookmark community in specific sorting order. There are user scripts and blockers and loads of customization. You can even add push notifications for changes on the site or RSS feed.

I've been running most Fediverse web apps through Hermit and it works really well! The only exception is that I couldn't figure out how to setup notifications on Mastodon.
