I disagree, this commenter wants to participate in any community they want, if you go to beehaw you won't be able to interact with 400 instances. There's nothing wrong with the community I and several others made on lemmy.world (the largest instance now), but beehaw can't see any of our content. Beehaw is the last one I would recommend if someone is complaining about missing content. I would instead tell them to check out this list on github and if beehaw is important to you just join an instance not currently blocked by beehaw from that list so avoid lemmy.world.

If anyone is missing curly hair content, I have a community at [email protected].

That's a problem with jerboa though, there isn't a good way to link anything for jerboa. I could be wrong but I've tried different ways and all of them don't work (they either crash, open in a new tab you aren't logged into, or don't work at all).

Alright so I would go with products that say they are lightweight since your hair gets weighed down easily. If it doesn't mention being lightweight or gives volume, you can probably skip it.

Companies that offer sample sizes (some you have to go online to their store to get them) would be: Curlsmith (weightless air dry cream), Moptop, Jessicurl (has lightweight versions of their products also available without fragrance), Ouidad, Shea Moisture, Aveda, and Not Your Mother's (target and ulta). This is not an exhaustive list but is what I could come up with.

I agree I wish the list also had the person's hair type listed, it really depends on the formula and not just individual ingredients to determine if it is light weight or not.

I agree, there isn't an in built wiki on lemmy but I was thinking of adding links to a post and pinning the post. I have the links to the r/curlyhair google docs so I don't think I need to make a whole lot of posts for the wiki but we'll see.

Why do you rinse your hair every morning? If it gets oily and itchy I guess it can't be helped but if it is just frizzy, you need emollients in your hair. If you wet your hair you should add conditioner to it especially if you are doing any detangling. I think you need at least a leave-in conditioner or cream. That could be the reason why it is so dry and frizzy. A deep conditioner doesn't hurt but I don't expect hair without a styler to last long at all, it would get frizzy fast. I use a leave in conditioner for moisture and gel for hold (stays frizz free longer) in my hair.

Do you use leave-in conditioner or cream? That can really help with keeping your hair moisturized. I think not having enough moisture is why your hair feels dry/frizzy/hay-like. You can try adding in a deep conditioner, Shea Moisture has a manuka honey deep hydration masque you could try. If that doesn't help, there might be too much protein in your products (your hair might feel stiff, tangly, sticky, and brittle if this is the case). Too much protein is fixed by clarifying to get rid of the protein buildup and then using different products with less protein or a different protein in them or no protein if your hair doesn't need it. Fine and high porosity hair generally can benefit from some protein, you don't need it in every product when you're first starting.

How is your hair's elasticity? You can test this by when you stretch it, does it bounce back (normal), doesn't stretch / snaps (need more moisture), does not bounce back when stretched (need more protein). Also how long is your hair? If it is long, your hair might be weighed down by the weight so that's why it doesn't curl the first few inches, this can happen with fine hair. Stringiness while wet sounds normal.

Wtf why have I not heard about this before lol thanks. I remember asking about it when toddlers were added and the Sim gurus said it would never get redone correctly.

Ways to prevent or minimise split ends:

  • Regular trims

  • Be gentle when detangling and styling

  • Don't overdo the dye or chemical treatments

  • Go easy on the heat and, if you choose to use higher heat, use a heat protectant

  • DO NOT apply extreme heat to wet hair (eg straightening)

  • Use leave ins, gels, creams etc to protect the hair

  • Sleep protect overnight

  • Avoid over manipulation (accessories, constantly fiddling with the hair, etc.)

Any of you guys get frequent split ends? How do you tackle them? ❤

What have you learned along the way you wish you would have known at the beginning?

I use loads of conditioner, or else I couldn't detangle! Anyone else relate?

For me, I love kinky curly knot today. I don't need a lot and it gives me just enough moisture. If it had protein I think it would be perfect.

My favorite gel is Ouidad climate control (white bottle). It is a heat protectant as well and I feel like I don't need a whole lot of it. I'm currently experimenting with mousse/foams but it's hard to beat this gel.

I am really liking the Mop Top shampoos, most low-poos feel like they don't clean enough but these do.

Btw I have long, fine, low density hair that is mostly 3a/3b and is more on the high porosity side.

Also I snagged a dyson supersonic second-hand and it is so much better than my previous dryer I used with the deva diffuser. It feels kinda hot but it doesn't do heat damage (that I've noticed at least).

Gels by hold level 😍 with visuals.

Here's a round up of some of the gels I have used and gotten great wash days from, categorised according to hold. Hopefully this will be helpful if you're considering investing in a gel and you're not sure where to start.

I have made hold level judgements based both on how wash days held, and how I had to refresh following wash day. It's worth noting, though, that some of the lightest hold products here have given me amazing wash days, so I dont always go for super hard hold. My choice often depends on the weather and when I'm next able to wash.

Yes - I have a LOT of gels. No - I've never used them all at once 🤣 nor do I intend too. The hold levels are also based off my personal experience with these gels. Individual experiences will obviously vary.

What's your favourite gel? Do you prefer light, medium or hard hold? ❤

Here is the before:

My curls now vs my curls in 2020 🤭 it’s been 3 years since I started my curly hair journey!!

The picture in 2020 was when I finally decided to chop off inches of my hair & go natural because my hair was VERY damaged (to the point where I had breakage & my hair was thinning) from heat since I was constantly blow drying & straightening my hair lol 😭

It’s funny when I see old pictures of my hair because I would’ve never thought my hair would look like the way it looks now. I remember being afraid of cutting my hair cause I was very attached to my “straight hair” since it was the only way I felt my best in terms of “beauty” 🌚

But 3 years later I’m more grateful for than ever 🫶🏼
