All too prescient. Commenting so this may bring it to more people's attention depending on sorting methods.

Regardless of the outcome, this was going to be the case in one form or another. One outcome makes it more of a pain in the ass, but the work of improving society is never accomplished with elections alone.

It's the unappealing truth that a complex array of efforts accomplish improvements to society, and safeguard it against its degradation. There is as ever more to be done.

I disagree. Stoicism at its worst may lead to resignation. Absurdism encourages defying the meaninglessness of existence in large part by recognizing meaning is made.

In the face of a cold, uncaring existence, absurdism or existentialism are two great philosophies to employ to reimagine how we want to be in the world and how we want the world to be compared to stoicism, which would reach its limits with and within reason. Absurdism recognizes reason's limits and realizes one needs more than reason alone to persist.

Alongside others mentioned (tags/flairs, multi-communities, keyword filtering, etc.) another feature I'd like to see added/improved is notification settings.

Something like...

In account settings:

  • Enable/disable all notifications.
  • Enable/disable post reply notifications.
  • Enable/disable comment reply notifications.

For others' posts/comments and per posts/comments:

  • Enable/disable post reply notifications.
  • Enable/disable comment reply notifications.

With those settings you could more easily tune out all notifications or only opt into those you'd like to see, and opt out of those you're done with (say your post/comment got popular and you've had your fill from the replies).

Unrelated to notification settings, it would also be nice to be able to block communities from the front page via the ... More menu in the default web UI.

Now for any occasion:

good stick that resembles a blaster gun

Excuse some rough edges, didn't feel like taking that much time on it

Ah, the vim part was me trying a little too much to express a short e sound lazily.

[–] ElectroVagrant 0 points 1 month ago

It will still raise eyebrows because that’s not how it’s said.

At least not yet, or by enough to recognize that it is (by some, somewhere!). There's bound to be an accent somewhere that pronounces it like this to where the "normal" way sounds strange 😂

[–] ElectroVagrant 3 points 1 month ago (2 children)

Without writing it out like this: (nō-vĕm′bər) or this (nəʊˈvɛmbə) I wasn't sure how to write it and express the varying sounds of the e's in it. Maybe "no-vim-ber" would have been better?

What you’re looking for is difficult to find in the framing of Science Fiction because its very framing invokes technological advancement - technology is the application of science, and machinery is the result of technological innovation.

Machinery's certainly a result of technological innovation, but not the only result. Different materials, even altogether different forms of organisms are also results of technological innovation. OP's left it rather open, so it may be that they also mean these different applications of science.

fwiw this is poking more fun at the other person that said this in reply to you, which is why I spelled it your(s and another person's) way

Hey speaking of, while [email protected] is a great example, if you're not finding similar communities for your interest, feel free to post over in [email protected] for what Zombiepirate's describing.

Hobby without a community around here? Just not really sure if an existing community is open to non-news posts? General's got ya covered.

Heya, I'm really good at inconsistency, so instead of a weekly thread, sporadic thread! Thought I'd toss one over and see what we see.

Tried any new foods, games, music, software? Finally made that mobile DJ setup so you're bangin' out beats as you ride your unicycle?

Finished that model you've been putting off for forever?

Or did you finally get your sleep schedule back on track and now you're too awake and want to wreck it again?

Been going back and forth on this, as personally I don't have much problem with politics posts and discussions. I know how they can get, and some of why people dislike them, but nevertheless...To not discuss politics enables the worst among us to take the reigns and drag us all over the cliff.

Given that, I'd like to pick apart what may be meant when people say politics. It's a can of worms, so to try to focus things a little, let's say, is it when they're distinctly partisan that disliking them may be meant?

Something you find across the board is the sentiment that a lot of political journalism has very blatant partisan-leanings, and for some organizations there's zero doubt of that.

I should also take a moment to clarify here, when I say partisan, I mean any strongly held political views, not merely left or right, but also including moderate/centrist.

Or is it slightly less the kind that matters, and more the volume of it, pervading every discussion? Especially when one may already be aware and trying to address it in their own ways, and is visiting an online community to get a little respite.

What's your take on this?

pit trap fields (self.a_vague_splace)

the data harvesters crawl the web but they catch and farm their prey in their pit traps

but the pit traps can only hold so many

they've almost ensnared the world, unless...

...a new elaborate ruse, they reinvent the past once more

a little leeway, you can run your own pits, fashion them a little

but you're still harvested all the same

it's a slight hint on the horizon, so they would have you think

but they are not the weather, nor the sun

they're another feeble structure that will collapse

however...we determine how long they stand

we serve as their bedrock or their shifting sand

may we be as sand that slips from their designs

and remembers how to form our own minds

Taking a note from our fellow community Casual Conversation (now on Lemm.ee), I've added a few links to our sidebar under Additional Discussion Focused Communities to a few more specific discussion communities people might be interested in.

In the spirit of federation, these communities are all remote, that is, located off-site from Lemmy World, while remaining connected and accessible to those here on Lemmy World.

The communities added to the sidebar are found below:

💬 Additional Discussion Focused Communities:

Also of note, this wasn't at anyone's request, so if any of the moderators from these communities would prefer removal from this post and the sidebar, they may message me and I'll do so accordingly.

Please remember that if you decide to participate in any of these communities to respect their rules and the rules of their instance, and that Lemmy World rules still apply in remote instance interactions.

p.s. if you're in growing communities you'd like to get more people participating in, feel free to reply to this thread with links to them!

Today, we’re releasing an open labeling system on Bluesky. “Labeling” is a key part of moderation; it is a system for marking content that may need to be hidden, blurred, taken down, or annotated in applications. Labeling is how a lot of centralized moderation works under the hood, but nobody has ever opened it up for anyone to contribute. By building an open source labeling system, our goal is to empower developers, organizations, and users to actively participate in shaping the future of moderation.

In this post, we’ll dive into the details on how labeling and moderation works in the AT Protocol.

...Which foods? A variety, or would it all be the same perfect food in an unending supply?

Think like a food delivery service but it magically provided the buffet items as needed.

...This post, but what is it??? It's clickbait! Unless you wanna talk about the weekend.

It's brought to us by workers, and...It should be longer! Do you create your own weekends with every spare moment? Besides doomscrurking (ooh, or doomlulling?), what do you get up to in those moments?

I've been reading, and catching up on some movies lately.

initial vague splace findings (self.a_vague_splace)

the lemming seems to like:

  • images with around same height/width, or narrow images, when it comes to thumbnail generation
  • for community icons similar idea regarding same height/width, but given circular shape, surrounding opaque or transparent shape may be needed to preserve intended look
  • for community banners, short and wide seems most apt to fit whole image
  • for sidebars, small square-ish images appear to work best without getting scaled down. tall, narrow images get shrunk and miss their point

specific resolutions would be mentioned, but uncertain of precise relevancy. current arrangements may be examined as reference, however they are subject to change as continued play proceeds.

approximate scaling trial cell, do not be alarmed, the digital goo is benign, the photonic slush will lavish the mind with delightful disorientation

may you have a strange day
