seems like it's either day+ old posts that are no longer relevant or everything everywhere new, by the second

if there is a good reason for this [and there really might be] please lmk; i assume it's less stupid and addictive to not have hot posts. but it is annoying and basically un browsable

As @[email protected] says, 0.18.x wil fix this issue, but it is not optimized enough for larger instances such as lemmy.world. You can also sort by the top of the day, week, month, year, and all posts.

[–] Quazatron 10 points 1 year ago

Growing pains. Just chill, it'll be sorted eventually.

[–] Dark_Blade 9 points 1 year ago

Yeah, they do have to sort that out for the platform to take off

I agree with @yote.zip, give it some more time for the developers to work out the kinks and get servers stabilized. While it may not replace Reddit for some, it is an opportunity to develop a integrated means of communication between different platforms. We are still in the infancy stage and I for one am excited to be part of the growth. Not going to look down upon or shame anyone who goes back to using Reddit. Everyone has their own tastes for "social media" and so far I'm enjoying this one for what it's worth.

I'm told the newest version 0.18 has more sort options but they haven't been able to successfully update lemmy.world

I'm still waiting for the lemmy.world update for updating jerboa.

[–] bmotacoj 5 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I was using Jerboa but made the switch to Connect for Lemmy for Android. Honestly loving it so far in comparison. They even have a "front page" type option which you can select as your default on logging in to the app. Between that and switching to "new comments", my feed has been active and related (generally) to my interests

I could not find it on FDroid

[–] bmotacoj 2 points 1 year ago

Sorry should've mentioned it was in the Google Play App store!

You're on lemmy.world which is still on 0.17.4. I think that sorting algorithms were fixed in 0.18.0. Once lemmy.world updates it should be resolved. In the meantime, sorting by "new" or "top day" will work better.

A temporary mitigation is that the lemmy.world server admin can do restarts of the server a few times a day, which seems to fix the sorts temporarily. I'm guessing they're probably already doing that, or you'd be seeing week-old posts at this point.

I want a configurable front page sort. for example I want a equal parts mixture of Active-Subscribed, Active-All, Top Day-Subscribed, Top Day-All.

[–] TSG_Asmodeus 5 points 1 year ago

If you set it to Subscribed, Hot, hit Enter, then change the '1' at the end of the URL to 0, it won't update with new stuff constantly.

[–] Xylinna 5 points 1 year ago

Sorting by Top Day seems to be the most effective. I typically bounce between Top Day and New to mix it up some. Hopefully new updates will help with the sorting feature.

[–] Sawblade02 4 points 1 year ago

I'm not doing it much yet because the groups are still small, but filtering by "Subscribed" takes care of most of that.

[–] trubedour 3 points 1 year ago

Agreed, "active" keeps pushing things I've seen/ignored to the top, and "hot" either doesn't work right, or doesn't work how I'd expect it to (like Reddit's).

I imagine it'll get sorted out (heh) soon.

I like sorting by All > New, but it can show a lot of content over a few minutes, and the way it adds things to the top and shifts everything down is somewhat insane. It could be fixed with a message like <click here to show 45 new posts> or if somehow it added additional posts below the initial posts, rather than above them.

I agree the main page (Active) isn't updated often enough. People who haven't used Lemmy enough to get used to the interface could definitely think there's simply not much going on here, which would be not good. "Hot" works, and a good default would be somewhere in between the two.
