!nostupidquestions is a community dedicated to being helpful and answering each others' questions on various topics.
The rules for posting and commenting, besides the rules defined here for lemmy.world, are as follows:
Rules (interactive)
Rule 1- All posts must be legitimate questions. All post titles must include a question.
All posts must be legitimate questions, and all post titles must include a question. Questions that are joke or trolling questions, memes, song lyrics as title, etc. are not allowed here. See Rule 6 for all exceptions.
Rule 2- Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material.
Your question subject cannot be illegal or NSFW material. You will be warned first, banned second.
Rule 3- Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here.
Do not seek mental, medical and professional help here. Breaking this rule will not get you or your post removed, but it will put you at risk, and possibly in danger.
Rule 4- No self promotion or upvote-farming of any kind.
That's it.
Rule 5- No baiting or sealioning or promoting an agenda.
Questions which, instead of being of an innocuous nature, are specifically intended (based on reports and in the opinion of our crack moderation team) to bait users into ideological wars on charged political topics will be removed and the authors warned - or banned - depending on severity.
Rule 6- Regarding META posts and joke questions.
Provided it is about the community itself, you may post non-question posts using the [META] tag on your post title.
On fridays, you are allowed to post meme and troll questions, on the condition that it's in text format only, and conforms with our other rules. These posts MUST include the [NSQ Friday] tag in their title.
If you post a serious question on friday and are looking only for legitimate answers, then please include the [Serious] tag on your post. Irrelevant replies will then be removed by moderators.
Rule 7- You can't intentionally annoy, mock, or harass other members.
If you intentionally annoy, mock, harass, or discriminate against any individual member, you will be removed.
Likewise, if you are a member, sympathiser or a resemblant of a movement that is known to largely hate, mock, discriminate against, and/or want to take lives of a group of people, and you were provably vocal about your hate, then you will be banned on sight.
Rule 8- All comments should try to stay relevant to their parent content.
Rule 9- Reposts from other platforms are not allowed.
Let everyone have their own content.
Rule 10- Majority of bots aren't allowed to participate here.

I'm going to assume it means that the client (installed app) is moving so fast (and breaking compatibility so fast) that some servers are currently unable (or don't want) to keep up. A reason to hold versions is, for example, to have more stability assurances.
The Lemmy ecosystem is going to be a mess for the next months until everything is properly oiled.
Sort of. If I understand correctly something in 18 broke captcha so they can't use it without being swarmed by bots. It will supposedly be repaired with server version 18.1. The Connect app for Lemmy doesn't seem to have an issue with the older server version if people want to give that a try. Jerboa is broken with lemmy.world currently.
I'm on jerboa and lemmy.world is working fine for me, though.
Yes, that seems to be the case for most users who are currently signed in other than some random crashing. New users are unable to sign in and are currently unable to use Jerboa with server version .17.4. I'm on Jerboa too and mine is working okay for the most part. If you haven't already you'll probably see the error soon if you're running the latest Jerboa release.
Oh okay. I just checked to see if I'm due to update Jerboa, and I am. Guess I won't be doing that for a while lol. I totally thought I updated all of my apps recently.
For the iOS folks out there: Mlem is also seemingly unaffected.
0.18
is the latest version of Lemmy. It has some issues with SPAM prevention. Most are waiting for 0.18.1
to release, bringing back some SPAM prevention tools. The app is developed by the same developers as Lemmy and they released some features that require 0.18
in the app.
If it's possible you could rollback to an older version of the app until the sites you subscribe to update.
This is the correct answer.
The warning is somewhat confusing. Second paragraph should say something like log into an instance that has updated to the latest version. You can always see the instance version at the bottom of the page when using a desktop browser.
Looks like the recent update is is around half adopted across all the instances based on what I've seen. Some instance admins are holding out for the 0.18.1 version where captchas will be reinstated.
Captchas had to be disabled for the 0.18.0 transition from web sockets to http. The migration away from web sockets improves client performance quite a bit and obviously it's essential for Jeroba.
Interesting the app and website tell you the website is not on the latest version. That’s good for both the user and site owners to keep the software updated. It like everyone said, lemmy took away some admin and captcha settings with the last upgrade. Many server admins are waiting for them to be restored.
Not sure what it means. But I switched to connect for lemmy and it feels much better
