Rural areas without reliable internet were likely a big reason. Lots of rural areas basically only have satellite internet. And that’s historically pretty slow and prone to dropouts when it’s cloudy. Starlink improved that for many, but it’s still not as stable as a hard line.

Considering they are telling subscribers to keep their shipments after 9/29, what are they doing with all those discs? Landfill?

They will probably end up at the dollar store. I’ve seen a lot of rental DVDs end up there in plain white packaging.

Redbox made them an offer for their DVD business — I guess there was still enough potential there that Hastings was afraid to sell it to them.
