Jerboa is a native-android client for Lemmy, built using the native android framework, Jetpack Compose.

Warning: You can submit issues, but between Lemmy and lemmy-ui, I probably won't have too much time to work on them. Learn jetpack compose like I did if you want to help make this app better.

I had this notice pop up when I opened Jerboa this morning. Anyone know whether it will cause issues? I'm on Beehaw, if that matters.

Don’t think Beehaw has updated to Lemmy 0.18 yet.

Is that a recent Lemmy update? I wonder if Inshould mention it to the Beehaw admins.

They probably know. Many instances seem to be waiting for a few features to be corrected in the new Lemmy like captcha to keep the bots away. That's what someone said in a different thread.

Someone also said Thundar should work from github or to downgrade Jerboa for now. Both would require installing an apk package.

Or just use a web browser until your instance upgrades.

I had this error pop up this morning too but am still able to see posts from beehaw.

They know. There are discussions regarding it

Beehaw needs to update to Lemmy version 0.18

Things will break here and there, but it largely works. One thing that definitely doesn't work is logging in, though it you're already logged in, it works fine.

no, it does not.

excuse me but jerboa crashing after each "send" is hardly "fine", not even "largely working".

why has the release not been synchronized? as i understand it this required server upgrade is not even available now?

first everybody said get the upgrade, it will fix this or that problem. now you are told to downgrade again ..

also, quoting/ pasting is messed up, filtering still does not stay as set and so on.

yes, work in progress but this way you will not be able to offer an alternative for those who will soon leave reddit because their app no longer works.

Remember you are not dealing with a massive corporation.

Some random dude made this app. This same dude was just tasked with managing dozens of contributors to the code base. Well organized and establishped companies struggle with increasing a department two fold overnight.

I think the dev is doing great. I understand your concern and it is a valid one, but I think we should try to set the tone around people joining that this is not reddit and due to the way it is structured and developed there will be different kinds of hiccups. Also it wasn't like reddit didn't have issues with updates breaking things.

The server upgrade was available two days ago, and the Jerboa release was available three days ago.

So the release was pretty synchronized. It's just that admins of various instances didn't want to upgrade for whatever reason, so you're left with two major releases of lemmy in the wild.

This type of thing will be messy while lemmy and Jerboa are in alpha release status. It is getting better, and there is talk about supporting multiple major releases of lemmy in Jerboa, but that's a lot of work and nobody has yet taken ownership of that. The issues admins were complaining about are in testing, so we should hopefully see more adoption soon.

So yeah, it's frustrating, but at least there's a mechanism for downgrading if needed. I sincerely hope things are much more smooth for the next release.

Chill man, the dude that makes the app is volunteering his time to make it. The mobile website works fine, I'm sure you can use that until the app is updated!

That's technically not true. There are two individuals who do most of the maintenance on all lemmy-related projects and they work for an organization to do so (i.e. they get paid to do so) There are also a bunch of other contributors who do not get paid.

That said, I think the main devs are doing a pretty good job with things. Only one of them works on the jerboa app, and they both contribute to the others. On Jerboa, the main developer gave another trusted developer power to help out by reviewing and merging code, and it's totally understandable why rolling that out to more devs is slow.

I agree with the spirit of what you're saying, and managing a project that's seeing a ton of adoption is a huge challenge. So instead of being critical, I recommend helping out where you can. Everything is open source, so it's really easy to get started doing whatever you know how to do. For example:

  • translations - if you speak something other than English
  • documentation - make blog posts, post here on lemmy, etc
  • testing/bug reporting - use the official release, and once pre-release versions are available, test those and report reproducible bugs
  • PR - communicate here and help others solve problems or reproduce bugs; an easily reproducible bug can be fixed in days, a poorly documented one may never get fixed

And so on.

Thanks for the info all. Can't see your responses in the thread, but they showed up in my inbox. Growing pains :/
