Welcome to TIFU.

This community will stand as a tribute to the fuck up in all of us. We all do something stupid from time to time, this is your place to share and laugh about it with folks on the internet!

Da Rules:

  1. Use proper formatting

A. All titles must start with TIFU.

B. All posts must have a TL;DR at the end. Some of us are too lazy to read your story, sorry.

C. Use the NFSW Tag, if a Post isn't Appropriate in General but still follows the rules. (Sex stories and etc.)

  1. Posts must be about you.

  2. Must be your fault.

  3. A few things that aren't allowed.

A. No Rape/minors/bestiality. No death of animals. No glorification of major crimes.

B. Illegal activities that you glorify or giving advice on how to do something illegal.

  1. Must be actual fuckups No humblebrags or stories that have zero consequences and don't go anywhere. Eg "TIFU by sexy sex". Moderator discretion.

  2. Be civil and don't be disruptive No racism/bigotry/homophobia/transphobia. No personal attacks on other users, no name-calling. No low-effort "this didn't happen" type comments.

  3. No Self Promotion No making posts with the express purpose of promoting your business/video game/porn career. Even if not mentioned within the text of the post, alluding to links on your profile is not allowed. This covers implying you will set up a stream/public link/onlyfans in the future, having set up one in the past, or anything along the lines of "upvote this comment if you want me to do this." These examples are by no means comprehensive, just don't self promote.

  4. Mod Discretion Mods have the right to supersede any rule and make removals as we see fit, which may or may not be the rules listed in this community.

MODERATORS

So it's like the title says. I created this community to kinda fill the void from the reddit shutdown, and have no real idea on how to moderate a community like this, especially if it ends up huge like the one on Reddit.

Seeing as I have little moderation experience, if anyone is interested in moderating for this community just lmk and I'll see about setting you up.

TL;DR - Created a potentially huge amount of work for myself that I'm super unfamiliar with.

I'm just gonna keep posting the same obnoxious shitpost, so you'll always know you can just safely delete any posts from me. I want to make your life easy :)

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 18 points 2 years ago

How considerate!

[–] irontide 28 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You got this! It's good to try new things, especially if they're scary.

[–] LostRedditor 19 points 2 years ago (1 children)

That’s the spirit! Subbed, and I promise not to make any work for you.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 11 points 2 years ago (3 children)

Thanks for lookin' out, my man. 🙏

I'm in the same boat. I created two regional (city, state) communities I was always involved in on reddit and would miss terribly and didn't exist on Lemmy. If they grow to more than 3 users I'll recruit help lol

[–] rskn 5 points 2 years ago

I've been wanting to do the same, but I'm far too lazy to deal with trying to get help lol. Also, it looks like people in my city don't really think the Reddit changes are a big deal. So, there's that.

[–] BlankSix 16 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Yeah, I think there are probably a bunch of us in that boat right now. lol

You'll be fine, and if nothing else, there'll always be the option to add more people to help with modding. For what it's worth, everything seems more chill over here, so you've got that going for you.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 10 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Yeah, this far the "small internet" feel of this place has been very relaxed.

[–] Crackhappy 15 points 2 years ago (1 children)

LOL. I've got three already, but if you want to add me to the team, I'll keep an eye out for you, mostly because my cardinal rule in life is "don't be a dick".

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I dub thee, Crackhappy. The Mod Boi.

[–] Crackhappy 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Cool, added to my mod folder.

So if you create a community you're the one that has to manage it? Because I was thinking of recreating my favorite communities from reddit on lemmy. But I don't want to do that if I would have to be the mod. I don't want to have to grow a neck beard s/... Jk, I appreciate you mods out there.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 7 points 2 years ago (1 children)

You can moderate yourself, but honestly most people recruit capable people from the community to help keep things running.

Hopefully the pottery community doesnt get out of control... because we just did that there too. I'm sure it'll work out for everyone lmao. I feel like it'll take a long time for people to really populate these new spaces while we learn things anyway. So excited for all the new things happening!

[–] gts 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I heard you potheads can go wild sometimes

[–] MeowyNin 6 points 2 years ago

Oh between the wet splattering clay and dust sticking to those unneccesary clothes we have some fun!

[–] _MoveSwiftly 11 points 2 years ago (2 children)

This is bound to happen as others stated. We're trying to populate the site all over again. Thank you for creating the community. :)

I'm doing the same, but haven't had too many people join. These are good problems to have as the site grows.

I just did the same thing for Best Updates (BORU replacement) only to find out that Lemmy post bodies can’t be longer than 10k characters (BORU posts are frequently over that). I’m not sure how best to proceed :/

[–] kadu 9 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Oh wow, I didn't know of this limitation.

We could open an issue on GitHub proposing a change. In the meantime, you could add to your sidebar suggesting users paste text larger than 10k into Pastebin or another equivalent website and create the post as a link, rather than filling the body.

Ideally, apps like Jerboa could have built in parsers to load text from Pastebin, images from Imgur, and so on, in elegant integrated ways which could mitigate limitations with Lemmy itself.

[–] Barack_Ollama 7 points 2 years ago

It looks like there’s already an issue open on GitHub (though I’m no expert, so correct me if this isn’t an enhancement request)

That’s a good idea about using a 3rd party site! I’ve never heard of pastebin, but I’ll look it up now :) Thanks!!

Thanks, brother. o7

[–] xohshoo 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I did the same, then was looking around for any mod tools, but I don't really see any? Or any guides? Anywhere I should look for this? And can you give someone else mod rights ('cause I'd kind of like to, I just didn't want the place to look like a ghost town)

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 6 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Only way so far I've found to mod someone was on one of their comments.

[–] candyman337 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

A lot of the bots and things that made reddit much easier to mod just haven't been developed yet for lemmy. Thosw bots are what makes losing the API bad in the first place. Someone needs to essentially develop an automod equivalent to moderate comments. If I have free time I plan to start working on something.

I would look at the rules of the sub on reddit, most of them exist for a reason. If you have questions, ask a mod, or someone else on lemmy/reddit. I mod on another reddit and lemmy account of mine.

Feel free to reach out if you have questions.

Brave pioneer! I applaud you!!

[–] STRIKINGdebate2 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I can't offer to mod because I have created my own communities here and will have my hands full managing. I can offer you my advice. My advice is to try to differentiate yourself from the sub on reddit, don't just copy it. Make some adjustments, bring some life into the place.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 4 points 2 years ago

I've already made few basic changes to the original subreddit rules that I thought might makes things more enjoyable for most. If you have any suggestions lmk, and I'll see about maybe getting it implemented.

[–] ElectricCattleman 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Just a thought... It might be a good thing for the primary mod of a community to not want to mod, and delegate it out. Keep their head clear and their hands clean.

I very nearly did that for my favorite sub, but I just don't have the time to moderate anything so I'll wait and see if anyone else does. Luckily it has a very active discord server so I've just been hanging out there. Everyone taking active effort and dedicating time to rebuilding these communities has my upmost respect and gratitude.

[–] WandererLagomorph770 9 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Lmao same, most of mine aren't super huge but there's a lot of em.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 10 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I really hope c/dataisbeautiful takes off for you. I'd love to have that content on this platform.

[–] WandererLagomorph770 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Was tempted to try and make /AITA too but I dunno if I can handle one that big, specially on my own.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

I've been considering this one for a day or two and said "Fuck it. If it blows up it is what is is." lol

Thankfully I've knighted Sir u/crackhappy to help with the moderation.

Too late. Already subbed.
If it's any consolation, I created a community at lemmy.world/c/powershell. And Just had to look up how to link to it. I have never been a mod, but figured someone had to do it. So, why not me?

Hahahaha. That's exactly why I only started one that I really really really wanted to exist but knew would stay pretty small.

[–] A_Toasty_Strudel 5 points 2 years ago

It's gonna be a learning experience, but I expect it to be a fun one.
