Excited and have been reading a ton here and elsewhere, the sale just pushed me into finally getting one.
I have a pretty decent gaming PC so curious to try out remote play. Also really into Starfield currently but have it via Gamepass, but read I can do the xbox cloud gaming merhod which 'seems' to work pretty well?

Read rumors about possible new hardware will feel dumb if better model comes out soobish.

Cheers!

I think Valve just said that there's no plans for a more powerful model in the next year or two. Granted that leaves room for a better display or battery.

I wouldn't worry though. I adore my Steamdeck.

I’m so happy to hear them say that. I’ll be getting on next week according to my wife.

I will only play at home in bed or on the couch, so battery isn’t a concern of mine. I was just worried a better spec cpu would make it’s was into the deck like a week after I bought it.

I was gaming a lot on my switch, but I didn’t want to start a game only to start over on the steam deck.

It's great for sure, my only complaints are the grips should be wider, you have to really bend your fingers to use the back buttons, it could be a lot more comfortable. Also the vent at the back is too close to the fingers on the right, along with the previous issue, your fingers want to rest on it. So a revised model in the future would be great for things like that, the display is fine imo, a bigger battery would obviously always be welcome.

I recommend getting the back paddle rubber bumpers that you can stick on. I believe it’s play vital on Amazon that sells them for 10-12 bucks. Totally worth it, I have the bigger bumper ones on and it’s a noticeable ergonomic difference.

The big thing that got me is, we're in a bit of a middle period right now. Most handhelds, even if they are more powerful than the deck aren't much more capable. The deck's software and support are keeping its head above the water of being obsolete. You also can't get those track pads on any other device. The dedication to repairability, hardware and build quality completes the deal.

Also if you're in your mid 30's, this plays everything you ever dreamed of playing when you were 18. Considering most older gamers tend to stick to their roots and multiplayer indie titles, it's ideal.

I mean, my favorite game is TF2 and this thing rocks it so, I've got zero complaints. Play medic, heavy, defensive engy or pyro and you'll do fine without a keyboard and mouse even on the try-hardiest of skial servers.

Yah I am with you, mostly I don't play super intense games anways to your point.
However the 'us older gamers' and 30th hurt a little bit!
I just stepped into the 40s I guess I will go crawl in a hole and die now 🫠😅

I'm about to pile into my 50th and older games for me can be emulated on a pocket watch 😂

I love my late 80s early nineties schmups so I play on my son's deck through retrodeck when he's asleep.

I really think the hardware thing is next gen for their ar which is due a refresh. My feeling is they are going to go back and forth so we are likely to see an ar refresh and then in two years or so after it comes out maybe a steamdeck one and so on.

I got mine yesterday, which was great cause then I could play deep rock while gentoo compiled stuff.

Btw for other gentoo users, you probably know this already but emerge -avuDN && poweroff

This is an alternative method for xCloud, I tried it last year and it worked well. I'm not subscribed to Gamepass anymore, so I can't comment on how it works nowadays.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

Works fantastic. I'm currenlty playing it through Gamepass and GeforceNow with Priority(have it for other Games anyway), since the Gamepass Version is locked to 30fps. It's a bit more complicated than running an .exe, but a well documented setup.

Have fun :)

Congrats, I love mine! Haven't even bothered with remote play because the Steam Deck has been able to run just about everything anyhow.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 year ago

I should be getting on next week.

My desktop is only slightly more powerful than a steam deck so, I may hardly turn it on anymore.

In fact it might take over home server responsibilities from my older desktop that’s currently fulfilling that responsibility.

I look forward to using steam deck in desktop mode for my random work stuff and then just undocking it for play.

This is really what I want from my phone to be honest. Can’t wait for a legit implementation of that on phones.

Welcome I use remote stream alot. When you do install and add steam link as well so if you are streaming you can open that when done and turn off PC without getting up. Out of bed in my case lol. There are other ways to do it but I find this the easiest and can use link to use desktop for other purposes as well.

I play Starfield in my deck with game pass and most of the time it’s great. Sometime you have to wait in a queue to play which take 5-10 minutes and occasionally I get some input lag but in general it’s pretty playable.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Thank you that's reassuring to hear.
Did you just do the edge install inside of steam and run it that way? Or full Windows dual boot?

[–] thorbot 4 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I just stream it with Edge, I refuse to put windows on my precious Linux device

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

🤣 Yah I really didn't want to do that either.

Welcome to the club!

Yeah, I'm still playing a fair bit of GamePass on the Deck (Starfield!) I used the method via Microsoft's official support article and it's holding up pretty well.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 year ago

Thank you I used this method and it worked great!
Appreciate your help

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Oh wow thanks didn't even think to see of it was officially something they were looking to support.

Do you know if you can do any mods? Mostly wanted the inventory mod I use on my pc

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago (1 children)

When using xCloud, you are in fact remotely playing the console version of games. I am not aware of any game that supports modding in that situation.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 1 year ago

Yah that make sense, thanks!
