MODERATORS

I’ve been prescribed medical for about a year for chronic insomnia and have been slowly making my way through modern Dr Who before bed. Almost at the end of Calpadi’s seasons and need some recommendations of what to watch next.

Star Trek: Lower Decks has been good to pad it out, and unfortunately I recently rewatched the GOAT reboot of Battlestar Galactica recently so that’s out.

Hit me with your best sci-fi and or fantasy fellow ents.

  • Star Trek: The Next Generation
  • The Orville
  • Fringe
  • Picard
  • The Mandolorian
  • Firefly
  • Stranger Things

I've repeated a few. But I highly recommend these.

I really liked fringe. Campy enough to be charming, but deep and philosophical enough to peak my interest.

[–] electrona 3 points 1 year ago

It definitely had a nice middle ground in that aspect

You could always watch Stargate sg1 and it's spinoffs. Maybe skip Stargate Infinity. Plenty of material to binge there.

If you haven't yet, check out the Orville.

There it is, absolutely Stargate SG1 - the series starts off VERY slow. Most people get bored after the first 1-2 episodes. But damn Stargate SG1 REALLY takes off after a few episodes. The science alone in that show is insane.

Dang, now I'm in the mood to re-watch the entire series from the pilot episode

There is a spin off Doctor Who show, Torchwood if you liked the Captain Jack character.

Cpt. Harkness is a babe, and I’m a dude. Hadn’t even crossed my mind, good call.

There's also Class and the Sara Jane adventures for spinoffs. But torchwood is probably the best of them.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds just started its second season and it's been really great so far, probably my favorite Star Trek since TNG.

This show is so good. Every time I start an episode I end up pausing it so I can get proper baked and eventually get distracted with something else. XD

-the expanse

-raised by wolves

They're both pretty damn good imo.

If your into fantasy, my favorite recently is definitely 'The Magicians'. It's based on a book series, but the show is kind of it's own thing and I think it's superb. It's sort of a mix between Harry Potter, Chronicles of Narnia, with lots of time loops and really well thought out magical power system. It's also got musical numbers and is just campy enough to be enjoyable

Seconded Raised By Wolves, that show was absolutely bonkers

[–] lortikins 2 points 1 year ago (1 children)

I'm so sad that raised by wolves was cancelled. Incredible sci-fi show!

[–] MiddleWeigh 1 points 1 year ago

It's a shame cause it really had some mojo.

Have you watched any classic who? Quality varies a bit but it's the type of thing where you can pick and choose which stories to watch. It's available on britbox in the U.S., I've been enjoying it a lot lately

Go for the full stargate trip, the 97 movies, then sg1, intermingle with atlantis and the sg1 movie by release date, then universe. download it all then plan ahead.

Torchwood is good, except for the last season.

If you like David Tennent (and who doesn't??) and are in the mood for more modern fantasy, check out Good Omens on Prime.

If you liked Good Omens, I would check out The Sandman on Netflix.

Red dwarf

It has a lot of similarities to doctor who but in a rather different way

Futurama is a fantastic show to fall asleep to whether you're sober or baked.

More in the documentary vein, but James Burke Connections always gets me to konk out.

I’m late to the party, and there’s only one season, but we just finished Silo on Apple. That show was badass. There’s a second season already filming.

I know you asked for shows, but the Expanse books (especially the first 2) and beyond awesome. The science and the approach to uneven technology distribution and advancement is so cool. I haven’t seen the show yet though so can’t speak to that. I can read after a sesh, but not everyone can.

Not an ent but a lover of sci-fi & the new Dr. Who in particular, who spawned a gaggle of kids with similar taste, here are some of our favorites - not all are sci-fi or fantasy but loved by us and not too disturbing to watch before bed.

If you have Disney Plus, the Star Wars spinoffs, especially Andor & Clone Wars. Mandalorian is good too but more of a space western.

If you can get the BBC (no not that kind of BBC get your mind out of the gutter) Chef! is great, the old Dr. Who shows as someone else said, and I loved Red Dwarf & The Mighty Boosh. The IT Crowd is absolutely hilarious.

I liked the Wheel of Time shows and kind of liked the Rings of Power. My kids didn't. Absolutely love Star Trek Next Generation, again the kids don't.

Me & my penultimate child loved the Good Omens shows. Gravity Falls is good.

Hope this gives you some ideas. Also - if you don't mind some horror, my youngest has been going through the old X Files, those go on forever it seems.
