News and information from Europe ๐Ÿ‡ช๐Ÿ‡บ

(Current banner: La Mancha, Spain. Feel free to post submissions for banner images.)

Rules (2024-08-30)

  1. This is an English-language community. Comments should be in English. Posts can link to non-English news sources when providing a full-text translation in the post description. Automated translations are fine, as long as they don't overly distort the content.
  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in [email protected]. (They're cool, you should subscribe there too!)
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)

(This list may get expanded when necessary.)

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the mods: @[email protected], @[email protected], or @[email protected].

I know some people won't like to hear this, but Europe should leave NATO right now, form a common army now and accept that the US is no longer a reliable ally now.

I know this will make some people dizzy, but the sum of our current defense spending puts us at the same level as China, far above Russia, we just have to coordinate it.

That require a proper military though ๐Ÿ˜

They don't need to leave NATO.

Just kick America out.

Well, whatever is easier, but I can't be clear that Turkey is a good friend right now

We should offer the Ukraine a support package now, with Money and Military goods. So they can tell Russia and Trump to fuck off. And we need to counter the hybrid warfare from Russia with the same bullshit there

But Europe is to lethargic I fear

No, Europe isn't lethargic or not doing anything. Europe is simply losing the information war for years now with the population not even realising it.

And so Europeans will loudly cry about nothing being done (while actually surpassing the US in military support - in humanitarian, financial etc support there isn't even a competittion as it's basically all Europe), will be scared of mighty Russia (while actually having more troops and more equipment than Russia -or the US for that matter-, actually modern/well-trained, too) and will happily vote off goverments that actively support Ukraine (usually to replace them with either corrupt lying loudmouths pretending that they will do more -they won't!- or equally lying propagandists having fully embraced the Russian narrative and telling scared idiots that they need to back down and let Russia do whatever they want).

There's news articles every other day that are basically "Country X sends Y pieces of equipment Z to Ukraine". They've basically become background noise from how often those get published. I definitely don't feel like we're not doing anything.

I DO feel like we should be doing even more, but that's a different matter.

Well you're right, right now Europe is ahead by 1/3 according to the Kiel Institute Tracker. But I guess we should as this war is happening very close to our own turf. But the point stands, it was not enough and it took to long. Ukraine is loosing right now

and will happily vote off goverments that actively support Ukraine

I vote Green, so no, I don't vote for lying corrupt loudmouths. I can't change the rest of my population though, who vote for stupid russian puppets or for the austerity morons
