A place to discuss comic books of all types, from old to new, Big 2 to indie, and everything in between.

Floppies, graphic novels, compilations, omnibusses (omnibusi?) are all fair game.

There is only one rule:*

Comic Books is a no judgement zone.

You can talk all you want about how Rob Liefeld is trash, Bob Kane is an asshole, or Frank Miller and Dave Sim’s politics have made them toxic, that’s all good.

If, however, another user is LEGITIMATELY a fan of something you don’t like, that does NOT make them a lesser person. Attack the art for being bad, not the person for being a fan of bad art.

* I lied. There are TWO rules... No piracy. Cover shots? That's good. Interior pages, in moderation? Sure. Full books? Links to pirate sites? That's how we get things shut down. :(

I'm not saying it's been a problem, because it hasn't been.

Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld has cut ties with Marvel after expressing disappointment with his alleged treatment at the premiere of the latest film.

The artist and writer is the brains behind the foul-mouthed anti-hero, and has a working relationship with the comic book publishers lasting more than 30 years.

But he felt sidelined at the New York premiere of Deadpool & Wolverine, the first Deadpool film to be released since Disney acquired Fox, and has opened up about his perceived experience.

According to Liefeld, he felt ignored by Disney bosses, including Marvel Studios head Kevin Fiege, at the July 2024 event and was upset to discover he and his family had not been invited to the premiere afterparty.

...

Liefeld, who receives large revenue streams for the character he created in 1991, revealed that, one month before the film’s release, he requested more involvement with the marketing and promotion.

He also wanted a special credit different to the standard one given to comic book creators at the end of the film – noting that his request stemmed from Marvel’s decision to give Roy Thomas a Wolverine co-creator status alongside Len Wein and John Romita, Sr.

He wrote in the email: “Marvel’s treatment of creators has never been their strength. Without the worlds, the characters and the concepts that we create – and in this specific case, the world of Deadpool – there are no films to shoot. No blockbusters to distribute. … I am not the easy button at Staples. I am the human imagination behind it all.”

Liefeld claimed that his response did not get received in the way he was after, tweeting: “My reps were screamed at today ‘We are NOT Fox!’ Tell me about it. Also hung up on.”

Not sure he comes across as well as he hoped there. He co-created a blatant Deathstroke rip-off with Fabian Nicieza, who later writers made into the character we know today. I suspect Marvel had enough of his demands.

I'm just gonna leave these here.

Also wasn't this dude, like, 21 when he ~~copied Deathstroke and added more pockets~~ created Deadpool? No wonder he was still tracing over photos of bodybuilders and then adding more muscles. He created tesseract physiques that would make Carl Sagan jealous. The guy drew four dimensional bodies in a 2D medium. Rather impressive, really

Credit where its due though, guy came in when comics were falling off hard in the 90's and his Pouch McMuscles style art helped to pull comics out of a big slump. Hell, he got Alan Moore to do cape comics again with Supreme, which was a treat. He's also one of the founders of Image comics.

He's got a complicated legacy, and honestly I'm happy the big mark on his career is his art stylings, and not the kind of shit that fucked up Ellis and Gaiman.

Your absolutely right. At the end of the day nobody's perfect. It's fun to shit on some of his work, but also he had a dream, pursued it hard, and succeeded to the point we're shitting on his work. So he's a winner.

That Cap picture tho…

There's no such thing as bad art

However, there is certainly bad tastes

In case anyone missed the gun=penis motif, he made sure to give it muscles too!

Clearly we should put creator credits for Wolfman and Perez, who created the character Deathstroke (Slade Wilson) that Liefeld ripped off to make Deadpool (Wade Wilson)... or maybe whoever decided to make Deadpool goofy, because I'm like 90% sure Rob made him an edgy dude with a lot of pouches and poorly drawn feet and wrists, as he does most of his male characters (The female ones get skin covered spines for waists. Ribs? Never heard of them.)

Rob Liefeld is not the star of Deadpool. And he's been on the outs with both Marvel and DC more times than I can count.

You know what would be new for him? Learning to draw more than guns with square barrels, upside down mouths, and pouches. Maybe start with feet and work up?

Yeah, coming with requests a month before release, great idea. I would also ignore or res tape him.
