Moderator Guidelines

Moderator Guidelines

  • Don’t be mean to users. Be gentle or neutral.
  • Most moderator actions which have a modlog message should include your username.
  • When in doubt about whether or not a user is problematic, send them a DM.
  • Don’t waste time debating/arguing with problematic users.
  • Assume the best, but don’t tolerate sealioning/just asking questions/concern trolling.
  • Ask another mod to take over cases you struggle with, if you get tired, or when things get personal.
  • Ask the other mods for advice when things get complicated.
  • Share everything you do in the mod matrix, both so several mods aren't unknowingly handling the same issues, but also so you can receive feedback on what you intend to do.
  • Don't rush mod actions. If a case doesn't need to be handled right away, consider taking a short break before getting to it. This is to say, cool down and make room for feedback.
  • Don’t perform too much moderation in the comments, except if you want a verdict to be public or to ask people to dial a convo down/stop. Single comment warnings are okay.
  • Send users concise DMs about verdicts about them, such as bans etc, except in cases where it is clear we don’t want them at all, such as obvious transphobes. No need to notify someone they haven’t been banned of course.
  • Explain to a user why their behavior is problematic and how it is distressing others rather than engage with whatever they are saying. Ask them to avoid this in the future and send them packing if they do not comply.
  • First warn users, then temp ban them, then finally perma ban them when they break the rules or act inappropriately. Skip steps if necessary.
  • Use neutral statements like “this statement can be considered transphobic” rather than “you are being transphobic”.
  • No large decisions or actions without community input (polls or meta posts f.ex.).
  • Large internal decisions (such as ousting a mod) might require a vote, needing more than 50% of the votes to pass. Also consider asking the community for feedback.
  • Remember you are a voluntary moderator. You don’t get paid. Take a break when you need one. Perhaps ask another moderator to step in if necessary.

Is this from People Who Died by Jim Carroll?

If there was a video game where you upgraded outlets, this would definitely be like a tier 4 power generator with bonus abilities.

Bonus ability unlocked: self-destruction

it would be really funny to set this up with LEDs to freak out any electricians who come in my house

total: $11.60 with shipping

i'm probably not going to actually do this, and if I was I would probably get a more trustworthy power supply (like this, would be an extra $3.40 for some more peace of mind)

To be fair you’d only need the LEDs. Switched spurs for example that have an LED to show that they’re on just have flying leads that go to the legs of the LED.

Unless there’s some other feature you want that I’m missing.

I chose the led strips because they're individually addressable, cheap, and already arranged in nice lines that it's easy to attach wires to

I want the microcontroller so I can program colors and blinking patterns

Now that I think about it some (quiet) sound might be nice too, to add to the realism

[–] [email protected] 1 points 8 hours ago

That works. I thought you might have a reason mate.

If you have to plug it in though it's gonna be kind of obvious, might want something powered by a coin battery so you could put it behind the outlet plate without the risk of actually messing with wiring anything up

[–] AdrianTheFrog 1 points 1 day ago (1 children)

those leds draw 10w maximum though, they shouldn't need to be at full brightness (I know from having some of those that they're extremely bright) but a coin battery isn't going to last very long if you use all 30 (using more means you don't need as thick of a diffuser and can separate the colors more)

the idea is you would partially disassemble the charger to put it and the microcontroller in a custom, miniaturized case, and remove the outlet and usb connectors from the charger so you can solder and wire everything yourself

Ah I see, makes sense. With one of those full led strips I think it would be tough to cram everything in there if you're leaving the outlet in tbh, I installed a wifi controller for an outlet a while ago and even just that seemed like kind of a tight fit. Idk how to realistically do it smaller though.

The circuit breaker fuse doesn't give AF rn lol

[–] [email protected] 15 points 1 day ago (2 children)

Stupid thing kept breaking so I just jammed a bullet in there, working much better. Follow me for more electrical hacks

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 day ago

Electricians hate this simple trick!

[–] Eheran 2 points 1 day ago (1 children)

Yes, because the wiring and/or fuse are sized wrong. That is exactly the reason you are not allowed too long wires with too little diameter.

[–] DragonsInARoom 1 points 1 day ago

Or put a lower rated fuse in the cord, it would've tripped well before it heated up

That moment when you just chilling and get an achievement "start a house on fire" 😳

I mean, then you won't be cold anymore...
