I don't care that it beeps when it's done. I care that it has a reminder beep every couple of minutes after. Not loud enough to wake me if I fell asleep, but loud enough if I'm stuck on the couch to hear it and be annoyed. I get it! My tea is cooling. I'll come get it when the cat gets up. And the fact that it doesn't do it once to remind you, or even a few times... It will literally beep every 2 minutes UNTIL THE END OF THE UNIVERSE. Does anyone want this feature!?

But then when you finally get up it’s not hot enough and the cycle continues

Please get out of my home.

My kettle broke! ☹️ Don't hurt me, Limeys!

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

I do. Mine doesn't have it and it wasn't once that I've found long-forgotten, rotten food in there.

I did this for years until the other day my friend showed me that my microwave allows you to disable the beep/chime 🤦

[–] scarilog 19 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Mine doesn't have this option (screw whoever designed this thing), so I opened it up and smashed the buzzer with a pair of pliers.

This deserves a statement of ⚠️ regarding microwaves. They have huge capacitors and even when unplugged for hours can shock the shit right out of you. Please don't mess with microwave electronics unless you really know what you are doing.

Yeah 100x this. My bad I should have mentioned the risks.

If you want o go through life being a cheater than you do you.

The microwave is a single player game so I don't mind it

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

Mine has a few seconds buffer, where the magnetron turns off but everything else keeps going. After about 3 seconds it all stops then beeping starts.

Most modern microwaves have a silent mode. Try holding down the 2 button until it beeps.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 1 week ago

Feels ironic.

It's easy as searching for your microwave model + the keyword "manual", there's typically a section on exactly this. If nothing comes up just try a generic search like "How to silence microwave" and find what works.

FYI some microwaves do not have a silence function

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Or the legendary end it at 00:00 without making a noise.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I have done this twice! I felt so fucking powerful!

I also like the game where there's 1 second left on the clock from the last time you used it and you put something new in, but instead of clearing the clock you hit start and try to press the 30+ button before the initial 1 second timer is finished, thus tricking the microwave into believing that no time has passed, and that you are eternally heating the same cup of soup

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago (1 children)

This soup as you now heat it and have heated it, you will have to heat once more and innumerable times more; and there will be nothing new in it, but every carrot and every potato and every onion and parsley and everything unutterably small or great in your soup will have to return to you, all in the same succession and sequence.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

And that needs to be a new copy pasta. I don't know what the context going forward will be, but that needs to be preserved, enshrined in the sanctified and consecrated halls of internetdom.

My friend showed me there are button combos to disable all sounds. He is a good friend.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

This right here. Only downside is I have gotten distracted and forgot to go get my food without the beeping to summon me, but overall it's definitely been a net positive.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago (1 children)

I cut the piezoelectric speaker off of mine. It now doesn't make any beeping noises, which is nice.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 1 week ago

I did the same, so much better now

[–] affiliate 6 points 1 week ago

my microwave beeps if you hit the cancel button. it makes me avoid using it.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

And then leave it for your housemate to deal with

[–] Buddahriffic 2 points 1 week ago (1 children)

There was an observatory that was picking up these mysterious spikes in radiation that they couldn't explain. They thought it might be something new but couldn't see any events on other spectrums that would go along with this random event.

Eventually they figured out that the spikes were caused by people opening the microwave in the break room while it was still going.

So I don't do that anymore after hearing that story.

[–] SkyezOpen 3 points 1 week ago

Yup. I didn't realize that happened until a few times I would be making something with my wireless headset on and it would get very crackly when I opened the door.
