Every basement I've ever smoked weed in has looked like this
Add a CRT with a GameCube and a couple of madcatz controllers.
Never truly finish a basement in the midwest. Bare concrete is a lot cheaper to repair when it floods.

My grandpa's open air basement toilet had a brick on the lid to keep rats from getting in. The rare times I had to use it I was always so scared of a rat showing up and half the time I couldn't even go because of it

Keep them from entering the house from the sewer. That's what I was always told at any rate; the house and town were old enough it seems plausible. The house's driveway side door opened to the kitchen and on the right was a wood staircase. Right near the base of the staircase barely out of direct sight when entering the side door is where the toilet was just hanging out near a support beam not even against a wall. There wasn't a sink down there you had to go back up the stairs to the kitchen to wash your hands.

Maybe those basements are tornado shelters. Than you need a toilet at some point.
My grandma had one in the basement along with a "shower" which was just a spray nozzle and a curtain ring above the floor drain.
I have that! But mine is fancy because it has a poorly laid concrete "basin" around it.

I once went to a cousin's house in the midwest, and we went to find something in the basement. Fam, it was like the last scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark: stacks and stacks of Stuff as far as the eye could see... To their credit, it was all in bins and shelves with aisle space and fairly well organized...
Great uncle had the toilet but also an overhead shower directly above a drain. Right next to the toilet, of course. The floor wasn't even angled to the drain. He used a mop to push the water to the drain.
I mean the random toilet yes, but those red metal poles...
Am in Midwest, have unfinished basement, have 2 red metal poles down there.
Could be from the Pacific North West if that ceiling were 3 foot lower.
