Why are you friends with people you don't like? Why are you dating people who don't actually know you? This seems like a problem of your own making.

Believe me when I say every interaction was started with the belief that they were people who could understand me. I liked them. The problems started showing up later on, usually slowly, gradually, and every time they became obvious I ceased the interactions.
I broke it off with my best friend after over a decade because our political and social views started diverging majorly during the past couple of years.
I stopped dating my latest ex a couple of months after the pattern started popping up, once it became clear that she didn't want me as I was. I stuck around those extra months because I had to make sure I wasn't just exaggerating.
Maybe I just have bad luck. Maybe I have a subconscious sense for future disappointment and I gravitate toward it. I don't know. All I know is I don't intentionally pick the people who are wrong for me. Quite the contrary, I am possibly too selective in my interactions precisely because my parents and extended family have burnt me. I've even tried deep-diving into this aspect during therapy, but we concluded that I did not seek out the toxicity intentionally - with two separate therapists, the ones I've mentioned were the exceptions.
on the one hand, I'd say, don't let people sway your principles unless their premise has value.
on the other hand, I'd say: humans are social creatures. especially in cohabitation, there are going to be changes made by both sides, compromises large and small. Compromise is part of being a mature human.
I agree completely. I am all for compromise, it warms my heart when functional and healthy compromise can be reached, it is the finest drug my system has ever known (I am a diplomatic person who just recently managed to dial it down and pull it back from the brink of doing me more harm than good).
In this case, however, it was not about compromise, they wanted me to step over my principles. It was about trying to change me into what they wanted/needed me to be without giving a second thought as to what I wanted/needed myself to be.
It hurts so much to see that everyone who came into contact with me has rejected me through wanting me to be something other than what I am. It's not even the pain of understanding that this is just another sort of alienation, it's the pain of understanding that they saw nothing other than a resource to be used in me.
Edit to add: I honestly don't even know what is worse, that I don't even understand why they saw so much "profit" to be made off me, or that they saw so little value in what is valuable to me.
If that's all true, I don't have anything to add, good luck and find a new friend group, we need companions on this shitty journey.
Thank you so much! I wish you nothing but the best!
What do you want? You seem just like myself. Full of criticism of what's currently wrong but with no idea of what "good" would look like. If you're not happy then give up and try something else.
Funny thing is, I know exactly what I want but always loosen up the standards when around people, thinking that my want is unrealistic.
Maybe that's the problem, I whittle away my preferences through compromise until I'm left with something unrecognisable...
