I feel guilty everytime I think about it, but I genuinely enjoyed 2020 for the most part.

I got married in 2020, so I also quite enjoyed it XD

I'm happy for you but woah Nelly, that has not been the case for me. Some great life events have happened from 2020-2024 but it is has been a constant struggle.

Anyway, stay up now 🤙

Yeah, it's been a rough few years but we made it through and that's important.

I made a list of my worst years:

  1. 1997 and 2020 - tied
  2. 2019
  3. 2021 (into early 2022)
  4. 2018
  5. 2017

Although I won't go into details, for reference, 2017 was when sepsis nearly killed me a few times. It could probably be a good candidate for fourth place.

As a friend helpfully pointed out, I was in a good position to weather lockdown and even thrive (seemingly the same as yourself), but Covid completely derailed my life for years and I am still dealing with the mess. So the meme did hit home for me but, rather than 2025 lurking in a sinister manner, I'm aiming to push on and get the last of the mess sorted so I get on with my new life.

Is this going to be one of those cultural things like the Great Depression or the Blitz where decades later it’s just understood to be a point of cultural trauma?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 3 days ago

I'm pretty sure it will be. A worryingly high proportion of my friends and family's kids who were teenagers during lockdown have mental health problems (anxiety is very common) and, here in the UK mental health services are currently under unprecedented pressure. Granted it has hit older generations (I'm still not sure about younger children, my niece and nephew are OK and seem to have been happy to just not go to school as much) but in a more scattershot manner where there is a whole generation scarred by this and I don't know how it'll play out with the background noise of the climate crisis and culture wars.

I'm somehow stuck confused since ~2016....Maybe - maybe, there was something to the death of Harambe? edit: add the cooked weasel to it (before it?)

This but actually. 2016 was a massively eye-opening year for me, particularly with the US Democratic primary pulling back the curtain on politics in this country. It's just been a big nightmare ever since, and any reprieve that might have been felt from Biden unseating Trump was overshadowed by the pandemic and then, you know, where we're at now.

I would like to get on a different ride please.

...but still...

the new year doesn’t actually start until you go to sleep. it’s still 2024 for me and my plan is to hold onto that for as long as possible.
