Fortresses make you a sitting duck in any apocalypse. The best defence is building a community of like minded people who can help support each other.

If you’re set on a fortress though the best place is actually a prison, assuming the inmates have left.

I’m not familiar with the features of this castle but off the top of my head… Probably not. You run out of food and water very quickly under siege, and close proximity with poor sanitation would lead to disease spreading through everybody.

Subsistence farming is slow and hard af. The soil might be contaminated or lack nutrients, and you’d really be relying on good steady yields. Hard rain, pests, diseases or rot could wipe out your crops. You’d want to be companion planting and doing crop rotation and even then there might not be enough space to sustain many people or enough of the right nutrients to survive long term. It’s also heavy labour on not a lot of food.

Zombies tend to be attracted to humans and would pack themselves closely in masses around the perimeter and they don’t need to leave for any reason. Can’t be scared off. Don’t sleep. Pouring down boiling water or oil would only do superficial damage to the undead as it wouldn’t necessarily destroy the brain. All of the precious limited ammo wouldn’t make a dent in hordes. And there’s always more coming.

Could try tunneling out for a supplies route (water, firewood?) but good luck if zombies breach or other opportunistic humans find it. The people would be trapped inside and basically fish in a barrel

Edit: Ohh man I just thought of something. If the zombies packed up against the walls to the point they started trampling and piling up on top of each other (or got killed and piled up) some might be able to climb or walk over. How fucked would that be.

Also no word on whether you might have to keep out zombified scavengers like crows, or whether it can contaminate water or be carried by game/livestock

That wall on the left side looks trivial to climb.

No, those walls are largely ornamental. It isn't an established garden, and to the best of my knowledge lacks a water source.

Sounds like you've looked into this before.....🧐

Bro! Even somebody who's watched more than two zombie/end of the world movies knows this stuff!

Just a tiny bit

You've got walls around most of the perimeter, requiring very little effort to fully close off. The inside is extremely spacious with enough room for growing foods, and right behind you is a forest with a decent supply of wood.

I think this could house a decent survivor encampment, is there anywhere better?

  • Where's your nearest water source? How easy is it to protect?
  • Having enough room to grow vegetables is a moot point unless you have enough additional supplies to support you whilst you wait for the food to grow.
  • What's the soil like? What can you grow there? What's the climate like?
  • It takes about one acre of land to support one person, how many people are you supporting?
  • The walls might keep shambling hordes out, but what about raiders and the like? Will you have enough people to secure it? Will you be able to feed and water those people with the space you have?

And speaking of water sources, how good at not pooing in it are you?

Hanging Rock would be defensible with a little work. Good visibility of any approach, too.

Flinders island

is there anywhere better?

I suppose small islands off the mainland are cheating, we would have to embrace Curse of the Black Pearl rules to keep it challenging.

Fast or slow zombies? WWZ hyped up Windsor castle. Some of the Dutch fortifications i.e. Fort Bourtange seem good.

It sounds like it would be terrific fun. 🧟🧟‍♀️
