But it also seems like he is using this as a lazy way to exit the tournament while losing. And his excuse "I was gonna change tomorrow" even though he had been warned previously is grade 4 for the second time level.

If I had to pick, I'd side with the organization. Their rule is their rule for their competition. And it sounds like they were being fair in applying it. Why they have the rule is a great question. But he didn't want to follow the rules and left.

And nothing of value was lost.

It's a dumbass rule to begin with.

This is way more damaging to the organization than it is to Carlsen. He's the best chess player in the world and can shrug this off like it's nothing. We're talking about the guy that declined to defend his world championship title because it wasn't worth it to him anymore (even though everyone knows he could easily win it again). Meanwhile, they lose a lot of legitimacy by disqualifying the best from competing.

It's just assinine bureaucracy that has no place in the game.

I'm way outside of my element here and happy to hear the counter opinions, but that sounds really... Is Stany the right word here?

They didn't disqualify him... He quit because he wasn't planning on following the rules? While he was losing....

Just to say again: I think dress codes and the like can be reserved for all those cool kid clubs where everyone wants to maintain whatever vision they are trying to achieve, and not for basically anywhere else. But even if you are right about something you can still show it by acting like a petulant child.

He could have just said off the hop "sorry I'm not competing because wtf do jeans have to do with it?"

I was referring to the World Chess Championship, a title Magnus held until he declined to defend his title last year. This event is for the World Rapid Championship (and Blitz, which he also withdrew from), which is completely different. It's practically an entirely different game. Nevertheless, he currently holds the title for both of those as well (and has for years). He's also the highest rated player in the history of chess.

At any rate, FIDE has a history of this shit, it's not limited to Magnus. There's literally dress code drama every year. This is just the highest profile case. Most people cave. Magnus didn't, because he can (there are other reasons too, as there's a pretty significant rift between him and FIDE). He (and many other grandmasters) are getting really fed up with FIDE (for a lot of reasons more serious than this), and the dress code issue was the final straw where he decided to tell them to fuck off.

I'm far from a Magnus stan. I think he's an incredible talent but also is very lacking in many ways and I wish he wasn't so in bed with corporate chess interests. But FIDE is also a pretty corrupt organization with a ton of problems.

Popularity is good for the game and Carlsen has the most of it atm. I'd say Carlsen lost nothing and the organization lost potential popularity.

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I waded I to this knowing nothing about the context, and while I still believe he was at fault for not following rules, I appreciate everyone's thoughts on his actions in the bigger picture.

Interesting to see the responses from others who (I'm guessing) are actually into the chess stuff.

I'm all for getting rid of dress codes and other unnecessary rules that do nothing,so for me, there is no losing.

But I hate when people with power (because they are good at chess or have a shit ton of money) decide rules don't apply to them.

You sign up to be at a tournament, you signed up to wear dress pants. Sorry child.

They probably wouldn't have had the guts to actually dismiss him though, so again shrug

So I looked and found this ridiculous document for the dress code

It even has gendered attire rules, but says men can wear national dresses, so I'd suggest Carlsen wears a bunad next time, he'd be super cute

Hmm... I don't mind the rule, it's likely implemented to distinguish people from other countries
