But only 4mm so basically compatible. Seems like a missed opportunity, another centimeter or two and Finland could have locked the Russians out.

If you look at the legend, it's not the Finns changed their standard, but the soviets/ russians did so in 1970.
Yet, this is depicted as green vs. dark petrol. The red / dark purple is between Brazil (1000 mm) and Columbia (~ 900 mm).

Until its independence in 1917, Finland belonged to the russian empire, thus, they shared the same gauge. As it requires the trains and tracks of all connected parts to be changed, it hasn't been changed since.

Spain is preparing to change to the 1435 mm system.
