This doesn't really surprise me. Overwatch 2 is basically a momument to the rot at the core of Blizzard. Its biggest saving grace is that there hasn't been a serious challenger in the hero brawler space (sorry Concord) until now.

For my money, I still think Deadlock is going to be the game that comes out on top, but it probably needs another full year to cook.

There's no chance Deadlock beats Rivals.

Rivals is simpler and is based on the world's most valuable franchise. It's the formula behind it's mass adoption. Deadlock requires the player to think more, and that alone makes it less popular than more braindead games.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 5 days ago

Neither Deadlock or Rivals are going to beat each other because they are extremely different and play nothing alike. Both games will probably be successful.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 6 days ago

They're different genres, not really direct competitors

[–] [email protected] 14 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Considering Rivals has already fallen into a GOATS meta and NetEase seems poised to repeat literally every one of Blizzard's mistakes...I wouldn't be so sure. I'll keep giving Valve the edge because Deadlock is a fundamentally good competitive game, and it's backed by the guy responsible for making DOTA 2 the best balanced competitive game. Maybe it won't stay at the top, but 10 years from now it's going to be trundling on and Rivals will not.

what's a goats meta? I know very little about competitive overwatch/rivals

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

3 Tanks + 3 Heals, designed to group on an objective and slowly grind out a victory. Blizzard spent quite a lot of time getting rid of the strategy in OW1, and it has never been possible in OW2, because it's both boring to play and boring to play against. mm

the world's most valuable franchise

Big pause on that one, theres a few franchises above Marvel

[–] Breezy 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

But marvel some how takes up 9 spots on the list. Its a terrible list if they overlap. Marvel is one of the tops if correct.

[–] Bbbbbbbbbbb 1 points 5 days ago (1 children)

Combining all of them puts marvel at the #2 spot, however Disney does not own the rights to Spiderman. I dont know how you feel about that but that still leaves Pokemon at the #1 spot

[–] Breezy 1 points 5 days ago

Other then fuck gamefreak and nintendo? Nothing really because im not suprised.

[–] Alexstarfire 7 points 1 week ago

The world's most valuable franchise is Pokémon. I will say the list specifies the MCU so IDK if that includes all Marvel stuff.

Lol, no way Deadlock gets mainstream like that. I’m a casual gamer, and Deadlock kicked my ass relentlessly. It’s way too complex, and requires a certain play style and strategy to even have a hope of being good at it. Meanwhile, you can be mediocre at Overwatch and still have fun

My friend and I were just talking the other day how Marvel looked like a carbon copy of overwatch, and we both agreed we'd still rather play it over OW because Blizzard sucks.

I wonder how many people have jumped ship just because of that.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Blizzard ruined OW with OW2.

[–] NOT_RICK 6 points 1 week ago (3 children)

because Blizzard sucks

Is netease any better?

[–] Breadhax0r 15 points 1 week ago

No, and i don't actually play either game. But I recently saw my husband playing OW2 and I got mad all over again at how it's identical to the first OW and the only reason for it was to more aggressively monetize.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 1 week ago (1 children)

Well overwatch 2 also sucks. I think the remaining players have Stockholm syndrome

[–] [email protected] 0 points 5 days ago

The game is still fun and they’re releasing content in a somewhat steady manner.

It isn’t as good as OW was in its heyday but frankly it’s still fun.

The new hero is a blast.

That said my buddy and I 100% switched to rivals the day before the new overwatch season (with the new hero) dropped and I have very little want to go back to OW2 right now.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 1 week ago

They haven't pissed off the Blizzard players yet.

Article gives zero reasons. I'll add my opinion. Newness factor. Not having the meta settled, the lack of map knowledge, etc. Just all the things that circle the "new" of such a game drives the folks at the moment. It's got the feel of early OW when you just picked your person, got on a map, and did the objective not really knowing anything.

It's yet to see how the balance patching goes for the game and how new characters for the game go. I'll say the game does one thing out the gate better than OW2 and that's the reduced FOMO in the game related to battle pass. You buy the battle pass, you have infinite time to complete it. Now you can't sit the fence on if to buy the BP or not, hence my "reduced FOMO", but this is one of those things they've started doing in a lot of other games like Halo and what not, and it's something that I think Blizzard should do for OW. But I don't think that alone is going to turn the tide massively.

But I will say that Rivals and OW2 are absolutely proving the F2P is here to stay as a model for games. So I really think those in the OW community who were salty about OW2 swapping over have basically lost the war on the topic.

Again, all my 2¢, and I'm not claiming to be some scion of knowledge in the gaming industry. Just letting you know my feels.

I'm still salty that the game that I paid for was deleted and removed from my account and swapped for other similar game named OW2.

I mean, whether f2p would contiue wasn't really ever in question. Its been a successful model for multiplayer for a decade. The question is more in how abusive monitization can be before players will move to competition or leave. Hopefully this shows that players are eager to jump ship (or at least move to competition) when the monitization is as bad as OW2.

Let's see for how long

[–] [email protected] 16 points 1 week ago (2 children)

I wonder what Disney is going to do when people start making Blender porn with their models.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Have you seen the original Little Mermaid cover?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago) (1 children)

Hulk with big dick? There's already Black widow R34 content floating around.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

Yeah but that's cottage industry compared to what's coming if this game has staying power.

Deadlock and Marvel Rivals' gameplay are too different to be compared imo. Deadlock is a more MOBA styled fighter; where secondary objectives like killing minions / denying points contribute quite a lot to your effective performance. Marvel Rivals is more of a team shooter, where everyone has a slightly different role in the team per design.
