If you find an injured owl:

Note your exact location so the owl can be released back where it came from. Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitation specialist to get correct advice and immediate assistance.

Minimize stress for the owl. If you can catch it, toss a towel or sweater over it and get it in a cardboard box or pet carrier. It should have room to be comfortable but not so much it can panic and injure itself. If you can’t catch it, keep people and animals away until help can come.

Do not give food or water! If you feed them the wrong thing or give them water improperly, you can accidentally kill them. It can also cause problems if they require anesthesia once help arrives, complicating procedures and costing valuable time.

If it is a baby owl, and it looks safe and uninjured, leave it be. Time on the ground is part of their growing up. They can fly to some extent and climb trees. If animals or people are nearby, put it up on a branch so it’s safe. If it’s injured, follow the above advice.

From Hoo's Woods

This is "ZZ", our most recent barred owl patient found standing in the middle of the road, eyes closed and disoriented. She'd been struck by a vehicle, but thankfuly, two kindhearted ladies spotted her and sprang into action. They safely contained her and contacted the Rock County Sheriffs dispatch, who referred them to Hoo's Woods.

ZZ is now in our care with a significant head injury affecting her vision, a common issue for owls with forward-facing eyes. Unfortunately, trauma like this can lead to detached retinas and even blindness. While her prognosis is still guarded, as of this morning has been moved from ICU oxygen to a hospital cage where we can continue to monitor her closely. Let's send positive vibes for her recovery.

She is a cutie! 🥰

I've been on a bit of Barred Owl kick since getting to meet a very sweet one this summer at the Raptor Trust. He made the cutest noises at me, and I got to watch the staff try to crate train him, which was new for me. That was to help him get used to being transported to the office for his vet checks.

That reminds me of when I went to see the cat circus (The Acro-cats) the lady that ran that said the first thing she did was to teach all the cats to go to their crates. In case of emergency, she just had to give one command to try to round up all the animals and get them to safety. I thought that was an excellent idea!

That's so wholesome and caring. Love it! 🥰

I like when the animals' safety comes first!

The Acro-cats was really fun, and seemed to be a one lady show. She had a big cat themed tour bus and everything. I only saw her once.

The other pet show I've been to I think 3 times is the Popovich Comedy Pet Theatre. They're a family run circus that I believe gets all their animals from the Las Vegas shelter. I saw then on tv and went to see the stage show in Vegas and I saw them twice on tour. I see they're coming near me in February... Maybe I'll go again.

Nothing beats rescue animals!

Oh my, you're going to wind up in an uncomfortable position if you start liking pretty owls in addition to pretty bunnies! 😮😆

I just checked for an update since I've got a few days' posts stocked up, and her condition has improved!

Wishing everyone a very peaceful and happy Thanksgiving Day! We are truly blessed and thankful for the support from our community. On another thankful note ZZ the barred owl has graduated from the hospital today into an intermediate cage. Yay!
