"try adding numbers"

It HAD numbers, you picked those numbers!!

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago

They even let us pick the numbers! That's why I got Nitro originally! I'd have never paid for years of nitro without that feature, in fact.

I don’t get their motivation behind this change. I mean I read the write-up they posted, but I don’t get how they could seriously think this is a better experience for users.

[–] [email protected] 13 points 2 years ago

it's a better experience for corpos that want their brand name to be uniquely identifiable.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 2 years ago (2 children)

Their blogpost was complete gaslight, none of the points they listed made any sense.

It was literally just look more like a mainstream social platform, there are rumours of an IPO...

Epic, another shittification speedrun?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago)

Twitter, Reddit and Discord in the span of one year? Great...

Edit: sorry to be Reddit-pedantic but it's enshittificarion

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Oh good, Discord is gonna blow itself up. Maybe we can all go back to Mumble and IRC once it’s all over.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

I don't find the previous system even difficult to navigate. I guess Discord is looking IPO since standard usernames are easier to digest or something...

I wish revolt was more popular smh

They recently added display names while keeping the tags as a direct 'fuck you' to discord lol

[–] Aurix 5 points 2 years ago (2 children)

I frankly have no idea why you would prefer it over Discord other than open source access. Revolt dissuades from self-hosting, is non-federating, has no stable business model and lacks in features. It is a prototype for a future where Discord catastrophically burns down.

To be fair, between Twitter and now Reddit, it’s not exactly a bad idea to have alts and backups lol.

official client is customisable and by default looks way better than discord, third party clients are allowed, it's feels the opposite of corporate, doesn't have AI, has its original features like multireplies and except for the pretty inferior voice chat that will undergo rewrite there aren't really any I miss, I do quite well without super reactions. as for now donations are sufficient, you always have an option to self-host and tbh if it was federated most people would be on the official server anyway, it would be harder for normal people to join and moderation would be harder so I'm pretty ok with not having it there... not like discord has that

[–] Aurix 1 points 2 years ago

As being part of some very large communities, as soon as Discord drops a new feature, there is some way these groups make use of it in a beneficial way. Revolt would not need just some original features, but near full parity to be even remotely considered, think LibreOffice vs Microsoft Office. And even then there might be reasons to stay due to implementation details for complex use cases.

@OtakuAltair

Do you know if it's possible to:

  1. Somehow add Discord Servers to Revolt? Like a bridge in matrix to whatsapp for example?
  2. Add Bots / Webhooks like Discord? I have multiple servers and setup alerts that use a discord bot.
[–] OtakuAltair 3 points 2 years ago (1 children)

I don't really use bots and stuff much, but there's Revcord on github to bridge between discord and revolt

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

@OtakuAltair

Correct name, wrong link ;-)
https://github.com/mayudev/revcord

But thanks, exactly what i was looking for!

[–] DoruDoLasu 1 points 2 years ago
  1. Automod bot is probably the biggest public bridge that you don't need to host. You can though. There's also the other one that has been linked here already
  2. Bots are supported (you can see some in Discover), Webhooks are coming
[–] Mentrix 11 points 2 years ago

Even though I got "pussyslayer69", I still miss the "#6969" :'(

[–] [email protected] 9 points 2 years ago (2 children)

they still haven't given me the option to "update" my name yet lol

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago (1 children)

It's based on nitro but also how old your account is. I don't have nitro but joined in 2016 and got a message to update mine last week

[–] [email protected] 5 points 2 years ago

oh my old discord account was banned a while back so I had made a new one lol. I guess that's why. I also don't pay for nitro.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago* (last edited 2 years ago) (1 children)

Yeah me neither actually. Everybody I talk to had to tho lol

[–] [email protected] 3 points 2 years ago

yup I see a lot of people with it already

[–] BloP 6 points 2 years ago

I barely got my username with one character change.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 2 years ago

Can't you just add the numbers back yourself and set a displayname without it?

[–] [email protected] 4 points 2 years ago (1 children)

Try revolt. I've used it, and it seems like a great alternative. They recently added the numbers, lol. https://revolt.chat

lets all be real. non-unique names what makes discord real discord and what also eliminates unique name marketing or targetting

pomelo moment

[–] NorthWestWind 2 points 2 years ago

Screw them. They use snowflakes anyway so what's the point

[–] [email protected] 2 points 2 years ago

Thankfully I have unique enough username(brand name)

[–] MacDougal 2 points 2 years ago

I thought about trying tobdo mine with the pound sign followed by the original numbers but oddly MacDougal was available still so i ran with it
