Good news for the fediverse. Twitter and Reddit can suck one.

Yea, apple have been oddly supportive of fediverse stuff. They had a blog post recently on their app store or something that was a general introduction to mastodon and federation.

I suspect part of it is that there are people in the company that are on and like the fediverse.

More cynically, it's simple business, they stand to make money from all of the apps that might get sold, and probably stand to gain from a fracturing of the big-social monopolies.

Still, it's kinda cool to see.

@maegul I doubt the amount of money that apple would really make is worth the payroll of the person writing blogposts in the app store so I don't think its money, but they definitely seem to be aware of this place in a way that I haven't seen many other companies

Well Apple aren't exactly outside of the Ads business ... they've made slow movements to doing more ad stuff ... clearly trying to tow the line between "we respect privacy and protect you from tracking" and "maybe now's a good time to show a simple ad". So far, I don't have any problems from what I've seen. But from this perspective, big social companies are huge competitors for ads. If bringing them down helps, and then being the sole corporate entity through which a bunch of social media activity occurs helps more ... I can see some cynical strategic thinking.

But yea, generally at the moment, they seem to be aware and it's cool. So far the fediverse iOS app story has been a good one ... enough to earn some brand loyalty from some I'd say.
